Bill C From the dread-laden opening chords and the menacing shots of rusted pipes, it’s clear we’re in for a tense and unsettling tale. Extramundane plunges us into the life of Trevor (Brant Rotnem), who takes on the role of property manager at a disturbingly eerie apartment complex amid a pandemic. As Trevor navigates his new job, he grapples with the loss of his father and the mysterious disappearances of various tenants. The film is saturated with mystery, keeping the audience on edge as it unravels its dark secrets. The cinematography is leeched of color, providing a gritty, almost oppressive feel that perfectly matches the film’s tone. The sound design and score are particularly effective, heightening the tension and drawing viewers deeper into the narrative. While Extramundane includes several slow-burn dialogue scenes, it’s the direction and cinematography that truly shine, keeping audiences glued to the unfolding story. The film masterfully combines its visual and auditory elements to create a haunting atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review austin b A darkly funny covid indie from writer/director Joshua Sowden who quite cleverly manages to weave and sustain remarkable tension and suspense within the near-claustrophobic confines of a covid distressed LA apartment complex ripe with fear and trepidation. I could be wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if Sowden took some of his inspiration from Polanski's earlier films. In fact, the excellent and at times funny cast (see Covid Ass Kicker) can hold their own against many a big budget - big name production. Good camera work and skilled preparation make it easy to loose yourself in this well-paced horror-thriller.The awards and nominations are certainly deserved and with more to come I am sure. Enjoy as I did. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review kyle s Extramundane is an unsettling and effective thriller. It makes the job of apartment manager seem dangerous. This film really gets under your skin and stays in your mind. The direction and cinematography were excellent. The desaturated look was interesting as well. Well done all around! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Kris Y A new building manager during the height of the pandemic takes it upon himself to solve the mystery of why so many people in his building have gone missing. He discovers a dark history of the building and enters a nightmare from which he must fight to escape. I've seen a few ""contained", isolation films that were made during the pandemic and they were not great however this indie film surprised me. The camera work is good, the acting is believable and the writing is not bad. It kept me guessing and the twist is great. Check out Extramundane! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/20/22 Full Review Rick I Extra-effective This movie opens with a scene that got me on edge quicker than anything in recent memory and never really let up from there. I thought it stumbled a bit with some of the cinematography choices. I wonder how much of that had to do with shooting during the pandemic, which was woven into the story in an interesting way; always present but never the focus. But all in all, there's a mystery, a monster, some legitimately creepy sequence, and some good performances, what more could you ask for? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/22 Full Review Jim T This film is smart and fun to watch. Its sort of like a great mystery, that keeps you guessing until the final revelation......... Nonetheless, Its firmly entrenched in the Horror genre. Lots of creepy moments that encapsulate the feel of loneliness and isolation that we all went through during the height of the pandemic. The characters are cool enough to root for, questionable enough to doubt... I really love how they vacillate between really disturbing to understandably sympathetic..... They're human beings, trekking through a world that is desperate. I'm sincerely impressed by what this team was able to accomplish and hope its the first of many films for them. I'll certainly watch more of what they create. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/22 Full Review Read all reviews
