Audience Member With everything going on right now in the world, it's bracing to see a documentary that makes you feel hopeful in humanity. Seeing a man struggling to stay afloat in life and becoming successful but not forgetting his roots is humbling. I have heard of John Paul DeJoria but I never truly knew who he was or that he was a philanthropist. The film was entertaining and seeing JP being interviewed added a rawness to the film. Learning about the organizations that he supports and doing it so in a humble way is refreshing to see. These are the type of documentaries that interest me and makes me want to see more about JP as well as become more interested in these types other documentaries. Joshua & Rebecca Tickell did an outstanding job illustrating JP's journey from homeless man to a billionaire. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Anyone who wants to take a step back from the rampant negative corporate hysteria should try watching Good Fortune. It's a documentary about the life story of John Paul DeJoria the three times homeless billionaire. It's a really uplifting movie, with many memorable quotes and moments of triumph. John is just so unerringly positive that you can't help but begin to believe that you too can really do anything you set your mind to. Especially if you make sure to give back to the communities that supply your success. You find out John was ahead of the curve of the rest of the business world in terms of social responsibility. Not only does he donate to 160 charities worldwide, but he also was a green company before it was cool. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie because it makes you remember that every big-name businessman isn't out for world domination. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Amazing story, amazing man, simply inspiring, its a must see! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member loved the movie and it is a perfect depiction of the kind of many that John Paul is. Shows that America still works! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I heard JP speak about this movie on the Dan Le Batard sports talk radio show while driving and as soon as I got in front of my computer, I googled the movie to find out it was playing in Santa Monica and the Director's would be on hand afterwards for a Q&A. Everyone MUST SEE this movie...Inspiring, Humane and Righteous are a few of the many words to describe this Amazing Man! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member John Paul DeJoria shows his true colors in the documentary Good Fortune as you see his love for giving back to those in need, a plethora of organizations, and his hope for doing right by the planet through his involvement in many conservation organizations as well as his use of recycled material for many of his businesses. You get to see his journey eagerly captured by the directors as he goes from foster care to the navy to homelessness to riches and philanthropy. Throughout you see that he doesn't lose sight of who he is, where he came from, or what he went through based off of his contributions and hands on work he does with the many organizations he works with. The film utilizes an array of different present day footage, archive footage, and reenactments that each brings an authentic feel to the documentary. The film continues to engage the audience through the soundtrack that corresponds to the time in which is presently being talked about, whether it was the 70s or 80s, the soundtrack was upbeat, catchy, and perfect for the scene at hand. I recommend this documentary to anyone wanting an authentic look at both the business world, past and present, and an inside look at the life of JP DeJoria and his companies. Nick Schager Village Voice Too bad, then, that Good Fortune is such a doggedly hagiographic nonfiction portrait, reducing his entire saga and ethos to PR-style slogans. Jun 30, 2017 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times The movie itself plays more like a corporate recruitment video - or an extended episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" - than a deep, discerning dive into an American success story. Jun 29, 2017 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com He's a pleasure to spend time with, which is one reason this movie goes down so easy. Rated: 3/4 Jun 23, 2017 Full Review Dominic Griffin Spectrum Culture It's laudable that DeJoria is so sincere about giving back and paying it forward, but it's a damn shame this film didn't offer even the slightest counterpoint to his idyllic take on the nature of success. Rated: 3/5 Jul 17, 2019 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat No matter where you fall on the economic spectrum, John Paul's story is the inspiration for everyone to give. Rated: 4/5 Aug 4, 2017 Full Review Alexandra Hepworth Film Inquiry Whilst the portrayal of John Paul DeJoria is arguably one sided, Good Fortune is a heart-warming rags to riches story, overcoming both social and economical adversity.
