Wayne K Jan 20 It’s very rare that a filmmaker hits it big with a movie, only to tank their career with the follow up. Michael Cimino is an obvious example, but lesser know is Dennis Hopper. Striking the right cord at the right time with Easy Rider, he was given carte blanche for his next film, and through a combination of what I imagine were some pretty strong intoxicants, he came out with The Last Movie. I can see what Hopper was going for; a metaphysical tale of a stuntman who gets caught up in a series of events where reality and fiction blend together, and both his attitude and his constant state of inebriation make it increasingly different to tell the difference between the 2. We get segments from a movie set and segments from our lead’s personal life, playing out with missing scenes, jumpy editing and only a tenuous grip on chronology. Hopper set out to make a film that played around with its meta concept, but the lack of a straightforward story left audiences alienated and studio heads furious, and he wouldn’t direct again for almost 10 years. The film is repetitive at times, and the lack of coherence makes some events feel pointless and tacked on, but you can’t fault Hopper for attempting something different. Some of it works, some of it doesn’t, but The Last Movie is anything but an ordinary cinematic experience, and for that reason, every cinephile should have it on their watchlist. I've never really seen Hopper as a very good actor, and now not as a director or producer. Deshalb gibts heute The Last Movie. - Wirklich beeindruckend! Dennis Hopper, über Nacht zum Star und hoffnungsvollen Regisseur mutiert, ja zum Neuerer! - liefert hier ein Stück filmische Müllkippe ab. The Last Movie ist genauso undiszipliniert, wie zusammenhangslos und strukturlos. Ein wirres Durcheinander. Wie mag wohl seine Intention gewesen sein? Wir erleben ihn in einer ungemein pathetischen Szene, wie er sich wohl selbst sieht: Stoned, total verwirrt. Zu Hölle mit allem! Dennis Hopper als Regisseur dürfte in seltenem Einklang mit seiner Figur stehen. Es gibt solche Fälle, da man einen Film anschliessend im Schneideraum retten kann und ihm ein neues Gesicht verpasst. Einen Sinn. Nachdem Hopper mit unendlich viel Filmmaterial aus Peru zurückkehrte, versucht man, aus seinem Gerümpel so etwas wie ein "psychodelisches" "New Hollywood" Werk zu schnippeln. Vergeblich. Falls es so etwas wie eine lineare Handlung gibt, möge sie so beschaffen sein: Ein Cowboy hat gerade ein kommerzielles Western B-Movie vollendet. Er trifft ein Mädchen, ist stark verwirrt und dreht am Set einen zweiten Film, gemeinsam mit den Indianern, die in der Gegen leben. Oder so ähnlich. Ach ja, nach Gold sucht er auch noch. Alles dargeboten in modischen Bildern von László Kovács, mit einem fragmentrischen Ende, Gastauftritten von Peter Fonda und Kris Kristofferson und der Musik von Kristofferson. All die teuren Songs und die Gastauftritte von Freunden wirken wie der Versuch, Hopper beim Untergang zu retten. Vielleicht verbrachten sie aber auch einfach nur eine schöne Zeit miteinander, hielten Schilder vor die Kamera wie "Scene missing" oder "The End". The Last Movie mag ein ausgeweiteter Privatwitz sein, in dem das Publikum gerade mal geduldelt wird. Die Branche hat sich über Hoppers Schabernack so sehr aufgeregt, dass er jahrelang arbeitslos war. Nur über dubiose Zufälle durfte Hopper in den 70ern überhaupt nochmal Regie führen. 15 Jahre lang sollte sich Dennis Hopper jedenfalls von diesem Spässchen beruflich nicht erholen.
