In fact it was a film I’d only briefly heard mentioned around the time it came out, and with a cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Robert DeNiro, Elizabeth Olson and a pre-superstardom Cillian Murphy, I thought it might be worth a watch. The first half of the film is really damn good, with a fascinating setup involving bogus paranormal events and practitioners getting systematically taken apart, until one man emerges who might actually be the real thing. That really sucked me in, and I was looking forward to the battle of faith versus scepticism playing out before a live audiences who just don’t know what to believe. Sadly, the film devolves into cheap jump scares, ludicrous plot beats and gimmicky shocks as it enters its second half, and the whole thing ends on a twist so ludicrous that it squandered whatever goodwill was left. It’s not the kind of reveal that reframes the previous events and forces you to look back for clues, it’s the kind that makes you realise the filmmakers had no idea what they were doing and just wanted a whammy ending, logic, common sense and continuity be damned! It’s a movie that was shaping up to be a fascinating insight into the world of psychic frauds and E.S.P. charlatans, but just ended up being a contrived and unsatisfying magic show, more concerned with getting one over on the audience than having a story worth telling or a mystery worth solving.
