ralph d This film is proudly announced as a British Comedy on the DVD I bought in 2020. It is beyond me how with such a prominent and proven cast one can succeed in not provoking one single laugh. The story appears to hesitate between a parody of WWII prison camp films (such as The Great Escape, Stalag 17 or VIP with James Robertson Justice, but then you're much better off watching those) and the tragedy of an thoroughly British officer (Stephen Fry) who impersonates a German camp Kommandant and takes his role a little too seriously (like Bridge on the River Kwai, but then again you're much better off watching that). A highly unlikely premise (the German guards, including all the officers, have had it with their job and leave the prisoners to their own devices, and the prisoners, intent upon escape, decide to stay and sit out the war in comfort), some predictable jokes (the inspecting SS officer complains that the soup is too nice), and a strange ending where Fry receives the Cross of Iron at Hitler's home (a sequence which is as unbelievable as it is devoid of humour) and is upon his return denounced by all his men. The attempt at realism fails: Stephen Fry speaks German quite well... for an Englishman, no one in his right mind (let alone a German SS officer) would mistake him for a native German - and he is the best of the lot. The best actor is the Kommandant's parrot who greets everyone with "Heil Hitler". Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
