James Scott Austin Chronicle This film, bruising yet respectful in its honesty, portrays the still existing divide between the personal and public experience of being gay. Feb 22, 2021 Full Review Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's tender and touching, and I think what makes it work as well as it does is how observed and detailed it is. Feb 20, 2021 Full Review Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It doesn't feel contrived in any way, but it packs a powerful punch. Feb 20, 2021 Full Review David Reddish Queerty Quiet, sensuous and featuring two terrific lead performances, we suggest giving a watch both for its sociological insight, and for its portrait of senior romance. Rated: 3/4 Mar 13, 2022 Full Review Daisy Leigh-Phippard Screen Queens Though hard to fault, theres a sense that more could have been achieved with the film. Twilights Kiss becomes a tender look into everyday homosexuality in Hong Kong, and who can belittle that? Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Gregg Shapiro Bay Area Reporter More than anything else, Twilight's Kiss is recommended for its sensitive and realistic depiction of older gay men, particularly those in the closet. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A good gay themed film from Hong Kong is rare enough already, but rarer still, from any country in fact, is one that focuses on the lives of older gay people, the peripheral of the peripheral where there are no beautiful bodies and youth to help sell the film. That's why Ray Yeung's honest and non-judgemental portrait of two lost souls who found each other in the twilight years of their lives is such a breath of fresh air. Tai-Bo's Pak is a taxi driver, married with 2 children and a granddaughter, who also cruises the toilets in between fares. When he meets Ben Yuen's Hoi, a retired divorcee-grandfather who lives with his devoutly Christian son and his family, their relationship soon deepens into something more than just physical. Perhaps it's because I found this by accident whilst surfing the Netflix menu, I never expected this to be so authentically and lovingly put together by its writer-director and how subtly layered the lead actors are in their portrayals, communicating the longings, regrets, confusion and fears of someone trapped not only in the so-called closet but also in a family life that was constructed in order to perpetuate the lie. Deftly and surprisingly eschewing the conventional narrative route where drama and conflicts are engineered by having secrets revealed via some contrived coincidence or characters suddenly acting impulsively/stupidly, it remains mainly observational and quietly suggestive. There are hints that their families might know more than they let on, but there's no angry denouement or melodramatic tear-jerking here, except for a few didactic moments with Hoi's gay seniors social group and, by contrasts, a couple of unmarried/family-less guys he meets there. Instead, lives simply carry on regardless, as the film concludes in an intimate but truthful manner that makes it practically neo-realist. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrific heartwarming engaging love story! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/21 Full Review Audience Member Poignant, understated, beautifly acted. In one word, superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
