Josephine O'Neill Daily Telegraph (Australia) For the non-technically minded, its appeal is problematical. Regarded purely as a film production, it is a technical fascination. Dale R This is a World War II propaganda film that the United States government commissioned Disney to produce. It combines animation and live action segments to tell the history of flight and how to use air power to win World War II. During the history segment, they had my attention, but right afterward the film lost me completely. So much so that about 15 min after the history segment I turned it off because I really was not watching it anymore. You might like it if you enjoy WWII era propaganda and history, but I wouldn't recommend it otherwise. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting insight into the challenges and ideas of the time Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing way to view WWII through the perspective of those around it at the time rather than from a historical perspective. It is fascinating to see the thought development of those behind the war effort. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member VICTORY THROUGH AIR POWER - where to begin? I think what was most interesting about it was to see a movie about the war - indeed a movie about how to make progress in the war - that was made during the war. The violence of what war is really hits home in this film too; what I mean by that is that the way that we use advances in humankind in service of warmongering is simply shocking and devastating and awful. The foreshadowing of the atom bomb that would later reverse the course of the war in Japan is frightening. It's one shot in the film, but it creates instant fear from our place on this side of WWII. I wonder how people reacted to that then. The imagery where Japan portrayed as a squid holding onto its occupied territories as the it is attacked by forces from the air is just brilliant - as imaginative a sequence as any of the best climaxes from Disney's fairy tale adaptations, even if thanks to financial constraints it doesn't look as impressive. I'd recommend watching it all if you haven't seen it. It's a compelling watch, despite being of its time - although I think that's a huge part of why it is so compelling in the first place.
