Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear reimagine the procedural drama with "9-1-1." The series explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders -- including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers -- who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives. The show draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences of first responders who regularly face heart-stopping situations that are often unpredictable, intense and uplifting at the same time.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

9-1-1 occasionally veers into melodrama, but is redeemed with a top-tier cast, adrenaline-pumping action, and a dash of trashy camp that pushes the show into addictive guilty pleasure territory.

Sam Wollaston Guardian To be honest, I'm not quite sure whether I am meant to be sitting on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, or rolling around on the floor, laughing. And, in the end, I'm not really doing any of it. Or caring an awful lot. Rated: 5/5 Jun 19, 2018 Full Review Eliza C. Thompson Cosmopolitan It turns out she would, kind of. 9-1-1 is a procedural in the sense that each episode involves multiple rescues by the first responders, but it's just so off-the-wall that I refuse to believe this is what's happening on like, Chicago Fire. Audience Member Absolutely Hated It! (ENGLISH) 9-1-1 doesn’t try to reinvent television, but that doesn’t stop it from being a highly effective show at what it does: entertaining. From its very first season, it’s managed to hook viewers with a well-balanced mix of drama, adrenaline, and surprisingly relatable characters. While some storylines may feel like they're pushing the limits of believability, they work. And they work well. Each episode is an emotional rollercoaster: one minute you’re watching an impossible rescue from a burning building, and the next you’re immersed in the personal conflicts of the main characters. That’s where the series truly shines. Beyond the disasters and shocking moments, the characters are well developed. They're not just “heroes of the day” — they’re people with trauma, doubts, complicated pasts, and relationships that evolve over time. Some episodes even manage to tug at your heartstrings when you least expect it. Is it over the top? Absolutely. Are there unrealistic moments? Of course. But that’s part of its charm. The important thing is that it’s never boring. It’s fun to watch, and episode after episode, it maintains a steady rhythm between high-stakes action and emotional growth. Not every procedural drama can say the same. If you accept its tone and go along for the ride, 9-1-1 rewards you with a gripping, intense, and often surprising TV experience. It’s not a masterpiece, but it delivers on its promise — and sometimes, that’s more than enough. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Sydney C I love this show and I'm so glad that ABC picked it up for Season 7. Fox's loss and ABC's gain. What kind of crazy network executive cancels a hit show is beyond me. Angela Bassett as Athena is phenomenal. The entire cast is great. And the storylines are gripping, emotional, riveting and well-written. 9-1-1 harkens back to the old-school drama series' that had audiences glued to their TVs on the nights they were on. Bravo ABC for understanding the assignment. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Holly I thought this was gonna be rubbish..
