What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it's undeniably wonderful to see Heidi and Tim back together, Making the Cut feels more like a stylish cash grab than a work of runway art.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald The contestants are already hugely accomplished, and Klum and Gunn provide light entertainment and sometimes confronting advice. As polished as it is expensive. Jun 17, 2020 Full Review Melinda Houston The Age (Australia) It's about the art of design -- both for the couture and high street markets -- and seeing how storytelling, thematic ideas and personality are expressed in those two different forms (or not, as the case may be) is endlessly entertaining. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 14, 2020 Full Review Kelly Lawler USA Today Every change from the original formula simply makes the new series worse. Apr 6, 2020 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL The money sounds nice, but what the series delivers is the sense of freedom we currently lack. Apr 28, 2020 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Fun fashion showdown rewards design and sales potential. Rated: 3/5 Apr 9, 2020 Full Review Isaac Feldberg Fortune Nothing matters more than the bottom line, which may well be the state of things in our consumer-capitalist hellscape, but this colder Cut trades in pipe dreams for pragmatism, and it's an ill-fitting alteration. Uly d They had a good idea and a vision of how to make a new fashion competition to differenciate from Project Runway. The problem is that they lost the idea of what they were looking for, the best and creative fashion designer or just someone who can follow trends to make cheap and easy things to replicate massively and to fight for the market that Shein owns. Clearly they just want People to sell volume, not quality. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Emily M This show makes me laugh out loud in horror. There are two stars in my review because I just had to hand it to Tim for holding the show together. It bothers me some of these people think they are qualified enough to judge someone else's clothes. Every time Tim and Heidi introduce the judges before the fashion shows it is painful to watch them butter up their titles to make them seem more qualified for telling the designers if they do well or not. In reality however, nothing they say about the designs should be taken seriously. The judges actually tend to wear sometimes the most atrocious things on the entire show. They actually tend to think for themselves instead of how the average person would like the clothing. This show would do a whole lot better if it started getting brats and random social media influencers off this judging panel and replace them with people who's opinions can actually be taken seriously. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Susan B The last season I found confusing. I love the show 100%, watching the designers go thru their creative processes, each one different yet all have their own flare and passion, and it's entertaining as well as educational. It's almost like the fashion this year was beyond anything I've ever seen. Yannik as you say came from another planet and his clothes are just fabulous. I didn't want anyone to go home this time around! They were all THAT good and I liked every character! What I have to say is that two of the judges I could do without, as in bring on brand new judges! Tim is beloved and as essential as material is! However when Jeremey lost it on the contestants for the festival assignment, I was appalled. My first react was "HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO CONTESTANTS THAT WAY??!!" First off this man is a judge, someone all should look up to and admire and be thankful for his advice, good and bad. But his condemnation and belittling of each person, especially when he lost it on Yannik... was the worst thing I have ever seen on watching all the years the show has been on! Professional he was not. Admirable, he was not. Someone to respect, he was not. It was obvious to me and it made me realize what I'd been wondering since he began being a judge - does he really think he is so much better than other people?! That confirmed a great big YES he sure does! I understand getting upset, and to be disappointed in what they all had made coming from almost a perfect show the week before, but to make another person feel dreadful and stupid and worthless is NOT what I want to see ever again. He was a big ole bully. He should have been made to ask for forgiveness ON AIR. He does give off an err of arrogance and this show proved him to show his true colors that he shows slightly in almost every episode, that he really feels he is better than. I don't care how much he knows about style, fabric, what's what in the fashion world, NO. Just NO. Then you have Nicole Richie. She just has too much of a filthy mind and mouth. A little can go a looooong way and all her crudeness was just too much. You have a classy show. She does not add to or even compliment what the show is about. I find her hard to respect. She I'm sure is an ok designer maybe even great to some or whatever, it doesn't matter if I care for her style, What she has to offer and how she offers it is what offends me. A little sex joke here and there may be ok, but it's constantly how her mind works and she speaks it forth and for the general population like me, it's not funny anymore, it's rude, it's crude and I do not care for it as an addition to this fine show. Sounds like I don't like either of these people, but I do not know them, I'm sure they are great in their area's of skill and life! I have no hard feelings held towards them, I am merely a watcher of this tv show which I have loved ever since it began. I just know what I like to watch and another season with the two of them I'm just not sure I would watch it again. Other than that it's one of the best shows and I give kudos to everyone who has eve been on the show as a contestant! How life changing for them all! God bless and keep on keeping on! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Right off the bat, the saving grace of the show was Sander. He's the reason why there is a 1-star rating instead of a half-star rating. I loved his sass, he was entertaining, and he is an incredible designer. It was a real shame his elimination was so poorly handled, as they never gave him a reason why he was eliminated; he was told he "didn't make the cut". With that said, many other things about the show was trash, especially since the winner is a hack designer who owns a sweatshop in Bali, and the first runner-up is an annoying "black universe" punk rock designer who was given too many chances to change things up and never actually "evolved" as a designer. The judges are all stuck-up elitists, who despite being established in their industry, have little sense as to what the public would actually purchase. Also, the whole show just feels like a 10 hour long Amazon Fashion commercial. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I miss Tim and Heidi as the face of Project Runway, but I think this show is a perfectly serviceable substitute that is is still discovering its unique space and hammering out some kinks. Season 2 is already better than Season 1, I recommend it. Tim of course is a national treasure. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Nothing like my beloved project runway. The designers are pathetic and their designs are ridiculous. Can not stand Heidi anymore. So disappointed Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
