Driven by a soul-baring interview with Paul Reubens, the man behind the iconic character Pee-wee Herman, PEE-WEE AS HIMSELF is the definitive portrait of the comedic performer, and a window into his never before discussed personal life. Determined to correct the record and tell the factual story of his life, Reubens excavates his kaleidoscopic influences, origins in the circus and avant-garde performance theater, and career choices, while reflecting on the reasoning behind, and the consequences of, severing his beloved alter ego from his authentic self.

"Pee-wee As Himself" makes clear that Paul Reubens was a control freak of sorts, and at the end, Reubens finally gets in the last word unfiltered. It's worth hearing, and for this HBO documentary, it's just the right coda. Go to Full Review

In the end, Pee-wee as Himself offers a touching portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself publicly -- in the process, explaining why sharing his personal story was so difficult in the first place. Go to Full Review

[Matt] Wolf’s greatest contribution is in faithfully documenting his open, sometimes ugly dialogue with a figure who was widely known yet never, until now, understood. Go to Full Review

One of this project’s particular strengths and points-of-difference is it also offers a fascinating insight into the sometimes fraught process of making a celebrity documentary. Go to Full Review

The sheer volume of material that Wolf has compressed into the film is impressive, and much of it is fascinating, since it reveals the formative years of Reubens’ early life in a way that mere text could not provide. Go to Full Review

And while Reubens presents himself onscreen as evasive and combative at times, it is the most truthful he has ever been with his audience, leaving fans to call him what he always was: a gay icon. Go to Full Review

Scott R @ScottR Oct 5 As someone who grew up with Pee Wee, he had an impact on me. This film showed me so much more about who he was and what he accomplished. It was insightful and informative. It changed my view of him and his work. What I knew was so much more limited than what Hollywood showed me. Saw on HBO. See more Tod H @Todhop Sep 8 I was never a Pee Wee fan, but I watched all four hours. This is an extraordinary biography both in structure and subject. Reubens is a fascinating human who spent his life deeply hidden behind a powerful mask. This means almost everything he says reveals something you probably didn't know. He is both vulnerable and combative, deeply and openly conflicted about the process he is undertaking, which creates additional layers of meaning and tension as he drifts from openess to deflection. The sensitivity and persistence of the filmmaker who conducted 40 hours of interview and then sat on this project for years after Reuben's death, himself conflicted about how to proceed, becomes it's own meta statement about the biographic process itself. I began this quite sure I would quit this four hour doc before I was done. I finished disappoint that there was not more, missing someone that I didn't know before. See more Frank R Aug 21 As a 43-year-old who grew up in the 80s watching PeeWee and his movies, this documentary hit differently. I have a whole other perspective now than what the media tried to shove down our throats about Paul. I’m grateful for this documentary, and grateful for PeeWee—for showing us what love really is 🙌🏻 See more Aye E Jul 26 Very touching look at who Paul Reubens was as a person and his history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. This wasn't an expose or a comprehensive deep dive of his whole life. But it was a look behind the character of Pee-Wee. I wasn't a particular Pee-Wee fan, but always liked him, and knew the legal trouble he had was overblown and unfair. After watching this I really love him now, so human, and flawed and totally loveable. See more Mark M Jul 15 Very in depth look into Paul's life and how Pee Wee came to be. Incredibly touching voice over at the end. See more BENITA M. @Crazypaws Jun 28 Pure nostalgia. My heart felt both sadness and joy for the man that instilled much laughter that had greatly impacted my youth. I grieved both Pee Wee Herman and Paul Reubens. I’m glad he made this documentary. It’s one that shouldn’t be missed. See more Read all reviews
