Critics Consensus

A visual knockout elevated by Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer's performances, The English is a heady and somewhat meandering Western made with admirable craft.

Rachel Cooke New Statesman Is The English a masterpiece? I’m not sure. But it’s certainly like nothing else I’ve ever seen, its script a perfect illustration of the maxim that an artist does not need to be credible if he is convincing. Nov 23, 2022 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail The typical western is, to us today, a crock. Even a revision of the orthodoxy is tricky territory. This one is stunningly good, gorgeous to look at and wildly ambitious as a drama about revenge and barbarity. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Just as affecting in Mr. Blick’s rendering of his own screenplay is the consistent tone of nervous tension he generates in the moments between the “action,” and which the action sometimes relieves. Nov 16, 2022 Full Review Ally Ham The Review Geek As an episodic venture, the Prime Video series hits all the right notes–adventure, romance, revenge–but starts to crumble when viewed as one cohesive arc. Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Charlotte Harrison Charlotte Sometimes Goes to the Movies I’m not being hyperbolic when I say I think about this show at least once a week. Dec 20, 2023 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies The English is a masterclass in the Western genre, that deserves to be experienced on the largest screen possible. Erasibuth H This is my favorite piece of media. It definitely has flaws and the side stories can be kind of difficult to keep up with, but the storyline is incredible and deeply moving. The romance is refreshingly unselfish and loving. I think about this show often and it genuinely changed the way I view love as a concept. Also very rewatchable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Greg H Thoroughly enjoyed this, great story, scenery and tone. Only thing that ripped my knitting was the last episode with one totally incongruous track at the start and another during, just why....enjoy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Annette W Absolutely amazing, gripping and heart rending show. I loved every second of it, all the Actors were amazing and I fell in love with Eli. I was sad that he and Cordelia didn't ride off into the sunset, not the ending I would wish for two tortured souls with lives full of grief but it was still Absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend 🥰 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Rich M Very odd. Imagine a Sergio Leone spaghetti western made in Bollywood. Instead of dance numbers, we get death songs and much too long horse rides. It has the most ill-conceived flashbacks I've ever seen. Good luck tracking which time period you are seeing. If the dialogue has you asking "WTF did I miss?" at several points each episode, well, it's not you. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Great stuff. Really enjoyed it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Lynn M Very interesting and entertaining. I didn’t know what to expect but enjoyed the ride, plot twists, acting and cinematography.
