      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A visual knockout elevated by Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer's performances, The English is a heady and somewhat meandering Western made with admirable craft.

Previous Rachel Cooke New Statesman Is The English a masterpiece? I’m not sure. But it’s certainly like nothing else I’ve ever seen, its script a perfect illustration of the maxim that an artist does not need to be credible if he is convincing. Nov 23, 2022 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail The typical western is, to us today, a crock. Even a revision of the orthodoxy is tricky territory. This one is stunningly good, gorgeous to look at and wildly ambitious as a drama about revenge and barbarity. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Just as affecting in Mr. Blick’s rendering of his own screenplay is the consistent tone of nervous tension he generates in the moments between the “action,” and which the action sometimes relieves. Nov 16, 2022 Full Review Charlotte Harrison Charlotte Sometimes Goes to the Movies I’m not being hyperbolic when I say I think about this show at least once a week. Dec 20, 2023 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies The English is a masterclass in the Western genre, that deserves to be experienced on the largest screen possible. May 20, 2023 Full Review Paula Vázquez Prieto La Nación (Argentina) Cornelia and Eli's journey transits the margins of the written truth, within the boundaries of what's accepted; their outlook on violence is conscious and full of pain, never cynical or resigned. Previous Cynthia P Visually stunning and absorbing story. Emily Blunt is superb as always. Builds with intensity. A must if you enjoy intelligent historical story telling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Jason B A beautiful, perfectly concocted series that weaves multiple stories of triumph and tragedy into a stunning narrative of the western expansion of the United States and all the cruelty and violence that entailed. The acting is fantastic and features some excellent villains and protagonists. The cinematography is something special, like and old John Ford film, and has a warm light cast over the entire thing that is a bold but beautiful touch. The script, acting, and aesthetic make this series one of the best this year, if not the decade. There's an almost surreal feel at times that challenges convention of typical Westerns and it's all the better for it. It is truly something special. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review monty k Stunning in every department. Excellent performances by everyone, especially Blunt and Spencer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Jennifer A I hate westerns but took a risk with this one since I love Emily Blunt. And all I can say is "magnificent". The acting, the scenery, and the story were all A+. WORTH IT!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Alan M Stellar performances by everyone involved making the most of an incredible script, production and direction. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Cindy S Honestly the best mini series I’ve seen in a very long time. Story and acting is so good.
