Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Nick Hilton Independent (UK) Even though the show can be hard to enjoy (in the purest sense of that word), it has also increased in urgency as it has progressed. Rated: 4/5 May 7, 2025 Full Review Ed Power Daily Telegraph (UK) But as the depressive drama returns after a two-and-a-half-year gap for its sixth and final series, the wall-to-wall misery is wearing thin. Rated: 2/5 May 7, 2025 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com The continued existence of “The Handmaid’s Tale” can be explained if not entirely justified by its performances. Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Pablo O. Scholz Clarín Season after season, The Handmaid's Tale proved to be a series full of unexpected twists...And the final season maintains that intensity, even though the beginning is strangely much calmer. rafael j The final season of this show really ruins it. At times in seasons 3-5 things happen that challenge credulity in service of the story they want to tell. Most notably when June passes up her chance at escape because she wants to reescue her daughter although she would have a much better chance of effecting rescue if she were free rather than a captive sex-slave, but this is the story they wanted. a story about an opressive gilead not a heroic action show where the protagonist confuounds the opressors at every turn dealing the a string of defeats. This was a story about opression, fascism and survival, at least it was until season 6. In the final season the writers have abandoned any tension, abandoned the world of gilead they had established as a high-security police state. In the final season the rush to give everyone a happy ending and resolve all the conflicts for the good, any plot progression is lost. Suddenly, jarringly, the once high-competent oppressors of gilead have turned into bumbling clueless keystone cops. The rebels come and go from gilead freely. Murderous handmaids walk the streets after midnight. The once prevalent police state security has inexplicably evaporated. After 5 seasons of gilead's forces being competent and therefore scary , the inability of the oppressive police state to do any opressing or to catch anyone or to impose the martial control that was the primary characteristic of seasons 1-5 The final episode is the worst offender of season 6. So many non-sequitur things happen in such a short time, in an effort to give everyone a happy ending and have the good guys prevail in every remaining conflict, all crammed into that final episode, its like the writers forgot the world they had established. the whole thing is so uncharacteristic, so contrary to the established facts of this world that the audience is left confused and unsatisified. The finale is so nonsensical that there can be no denoument , no catharsis. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review T F Terrible season. In s6 the characters could drive all over Gilead, cross the border at will, drive to an unguarded hanger and plant a bomb on a plane. Of all the inconsistencies the insta-villainization of Nick totally went against the narrative of the other seasons. Nick was scapegoated while other less than deserving characters like Serena got redeemed. Nick is an embedded resistance character in Margaret Atwood canon and when the writers decided to go against that and attempt to turn the viewer off of Nick (and had June let him get on a plane with a bomb on it instead of saving him for ONCE) it destroyed this series. Then June isn't remorseful at all about Nick's death. She is as cold as a fish. I now hate June and will not watch Testaments. Why would I? Nicole won't meet her father at the end of the Testaments and June dumps Nicole off with her mother. Awful horrible nonsense ending. I wish the writers would have honored their own story in the other seasons. I didn't expect June and Nick to end up together at the end but I did expect Nick to be at least alive. And if he must be killed off at least have him doing something for June as he always did Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Audience Member A torturous and disturbing watch, with only 3–4 episodes offering a truly satisfying release of vengeance 🤬 That said, the series is absolutely worth watching, featuring gut-wrenching performances from the entire cast 🧐✌️ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Amy R Season 6 was such a disappointment. Episode 9-10 were extremely terrible and it just ruined the entire series. I can’t even see clips of the show or of June without it upsetting me. I’m trying desperately to erase this series from my mind and move on that how much those last episodes ruined it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Craig B This is one of the only tv series I know where I enjoyed it more than the book. Wish they would have ended more of the storylines but it really is mainly a story about June not Gilead and the war. hard to watch and not think about the current maga crowd It is bizarre how they are in love with extreme closeups of Elizabeth Moss, always found that annoying about so many of them. But other than that a very watchable and satisfying conclusion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review Harry B This season felt rushed, forced and tried too hard to be politically relevant, which doesn’t fit the original story. (Everyone should read this piece : https://medium.com/@drlitcrit/the-betrayal-of-nick-blaine-how-the-handmaids-tale-undermined-its-own-storytelling-55147d0a83af) - Clearly Scientology took too much creative control this season. Its take on feminism is shallow and confusing. The characters have lost depth and become flat and predictable. The show now centers too much on the main character’s huge ego. Even more troubling is the show’s dangerous moral messaging around forgiving abusers, which is framed as empowering but comes off as deeply irresponsible. Combined with plot holes, tone-deaf interviews that insult the intelligence of the audience, and a loss of narrative cohesion, this season doesn’t deserve any recognition and the team should be called out for their attitude towards fans. Disappointing to ruin such an amazing piece of literature as well as the talent of the actors. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
