Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Given these rigorous limitations, why does the movie work as well as it does? More precisely, how does it work at all? A significant clue is offered by Kathy when she says to David, “Life begins to look like an audition..." The talented actors form a nice comic duo, but it's almost excruciating to watch them try to break out of their cardboard personae. Audience Member Armyan Bernstein is usually known as a producer, but he directed and co-wrote this movie with Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman co-creator Gail Parent.  It has similarities to When Harry Met Sally as David Morgan (Martin Short) and Kathy (Annette O'Toole) -- our lead couple -- are continually advised by their respective friends Bruce (Paul Reiser) and  Nancy (Joanna Kerns). Now, they prepare themselves for their third date, the one where they may finally make love, and more importantly the one where they'll reveal themselves for better or worse to one another. It's an interesting film, as I never saw Short as a sexual romantic lead before and there it is. This is a movie where their conversation nearly happens in real time. O'Toole is gorgeous and if you have a strange crush on short, well...allow this to be your film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Good for what it is… but any more than that, not really Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/21/21 Full Review Audience Member Newly dating couple who genuinely like each other both devise their own set of lies so as not to turn off the other and leads them to a disastrous night out. Has its moments and is generally amusing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Story about a couples first date is the subject of this dramedy. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Good dating movie. I thought it was funny, had likeable characters, and some good music. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This gets one more star for the second half of the movie, which I loved. The first half is slow and pretty boring. It's just a third date. And it feels like you get to see every minute of their dull date. The second half of the movie is when things pick up, when the movie gets funny, and when we get entertained finally. This movie could have been better if it just made the beginning part quicker, and showed more of the second half. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
