Después de haber adaptado un relato de Lovecraft dando inicio a sus carreras cinematográficas, el dúo Stuart Gordon y Brian Yuzna junto con Charles Band se emprendieron en realizar esta película que es un cuento infantil con un tono terrorífico a modo de Hansel & Gretel. No tiene personajes muy serios y suele haber momentos de humor, pero lo que la película narra es algo que parece ser narrado desde la perspectiva de un niño. Los personajes que se vuelven importantes para esta película son la pequeña Judy y su amigo Ralph. Lo que la película pretende ser es un cuento con mensajes sobre la niñez, el niño interno, la infancia y la paternidad como un privilegio. El concepto de esta película es algo que podría compararse fácilmente con Toy Story por como se hace mención a la lealtad de los juguetes o lo que ellos pueden hacer cuando nadie los está observando. Incluso antes de que Pixar realizara Toy Story, esta película ya tocaba el tema de los juguetes como seres conscientes que se mueven a escondidas, como los amigos más fieles de la infancia y hasta como capaces de castigar a los que les infrinja daño a ellos o a otros. La pareja Hartwicke y los muñecos parecieran que fueran los villanos, pero al analizar la película, es claro que los Hartwicke tiene nobles intenciones y los muñecos van detrás de los que tienen malas intenciones. Lo que la película deja al final es una moraleja que deja un par de reflexiones sobre la bondad y la inocencia en la infancia y la decadencia de estos en la etapa adulta. Como muchas películas de los 80, lo que hace esta película atractiva son sus efectos especiales. El uso de efectos prácticos y animación stop-motion hace que esta película este casi a la altura de Puppet Master. Incluso la banda sonora logra generar una sensación de ternura y escalofríos como cualquier película sobre muñecos diabólicos. No cabe duda que Dolls es una encantadora historia de terror infantil con una moraleja interesante de analizar según la psicología infantil y que deja pensando cómo en la etapa adulta se ha podido olvidar esa dulce inocencia infantil. Recomendable para los fanáticos de los muñecos diabólicos y el cine de terror ochentero. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 9/10.
