Jay Scott Globe and Mail The Fly is a mass-market, horror film masterpeice that is also a work of art. Dec 6, 2022 Full Review Patrick Goldstein Los Angeles Times What makes The Fly such a stunning piece of obsessive film making is the way Cronenberg deftly allows us to identify with his monstrous creation. Aug 4, 2013 Full Review Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer Wildly imaginative, gut-wrenchingly scarifying and profoundly primal (not to mention funny), David Cronenberg's The Fly is a movie that whacks you in the solar plexus and leaves you gasping. Birithivy Y The Fly - 10/10. I’m currently housesitting and dogsitting, so I needed to watch something on my downtime. Considering so much people were logging in reviews for this film during the Halloween season, I gave this film a shot. Surprisingly, I never saw this till now (and I’m unsure as to how I went so long without watching it). I’m a huge Jeff Goldblum fan, and a huge fan of the Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror parody of this film. So I don’t know how it took me this long to watch this. Cronenberg is considered the master of body horror, and though I’m not a big big fan of his work, I would say that The Fly is probably his best and his magnum opus. The Fly is a great film that easily can be pushed to the side as a body horror movie, but its also a romantic drama that also happens to be a cautionary sci-fi tale as well. You have excellent performances from Goldblum and Geena Davis (who happened to be dating at the time of the film). They are both so great here, and they have great chemistry along with the playing into the dynamic of Goldblum’s character going through this change. Goldblum portrays the slow change so well, morphing from the human scientist who has brash and enormous dreams to slowly forming into the fly hybrid. Its a truly transformative performance. The little details he adds as he progresses through the metamorphosis is really great attention to detail and showing change in physical and mental state. Also, the makeup and special effects here are fantastic, and are a testament to the abilities and craftsmanship of the 80’s. Some really vivid, scarring, and downright grotesque effects here! Also loved the Toronto feel here, as you can literally tell this was shot around the city! Its one of those classic movies that almost seems as though it knew it was going to become a classic! Great film, and though I prefer Goldblum’s 90’s work, this is definitely a top film in his filmography! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Dionisis T Body horror at its finest! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Audience Member A masterpiece that still holds up to this day effects-wise combined with a truly depressing story. Can't believe it took me so long to finally watch this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Mason M I think that The Fly is most likely Cronenberg's best. It's his most tragic, concise, terrifying, and grotesque film that features an astounding performance by Jeff Golblum and some the the best special effects I have ever seen. I don't usually react to strongly to grotesque stuff like this, but Brundle's slow transformation kept me horrified more and more every minute. The Fly is everything that Cronenberg sets out to do in his films, and entirely succeeds. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Dean E Surprisingly good movie with surpisingly good special effects, especially for it's age. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Todd B Awesome movie, when I was 4. I spotted the Maserati car. Good love story and date movie. Fall of '86. I saw it on cable Comcast, then digital on Amazon. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
