Brent A 10% rating ... I love Pam Grier, but this film was atrocious. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review James K An astonishingly well-plotted and acceptably acted exploitation movie that is able to elevate it's shortcomings into an acceptable b-picture. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/21 Full Review delysid d so stupid it hurts. what a piece of junk Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/17/20 Full Review Audience Member Exactly what one would expect this film to be; exploitative and cliche driven. The Arena is not without its appeal beyond a young Pam Grier, and an abundance of 1970s nudity, it is decently written and several of the lead actresses nail the drama when it is needed. ...and, of course, be warned this film is going to be problematic for some. It is a film about female gladiator slaves so... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member While the film itself is no great shakes overall, I thought that the lovely cast of this one elevated it slightly. Starring Pam Grier and Margaret Markov (just a year after they'd made Black Mama, White Mama together) and Rosalba Neri in a supporting role, this one was pretty damned watchable. The Roman setting is a nice twist, as a lot of the low budget exploitation stuff from the era was set in South America just to save budgets, but this had some sets going for it. Worth a look, give it a rental. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member A group of slave girls are sold to a man named Timarchus (Daniele Vargas) the organizer of events in the colosseum of the ancient Roman town of Brundusium. After a fight breaks out amongst the girls, Timarchus gets the idea of putting the women in the ring to fight to the death. The recently captured Mamawi (Pam Grier) and Bodicia (Margaret Markov) realize they must stick together if they are to survive... "The Arena" (1974) is more or less a women in prison film with elements of blaxploitation, but set in ancient Rome. What you get is nudity, catfights, b-movie violence, poor acting, poor direction, wobbly cinematography and a script that is not that much to hang in the christmas tree. Then again with Roger Corman as a producer I reckon you can´t expect anything else. However, you also get the cool, tough and sexy Pam Grier & Margaret Markov teamed up yet again after their success in "Black Mama, White Mama". "The Arena" is not as "good" as "Black Mama, White Mama", but I do love Pam Grier so anything with her will fly for me despite tons of flaws and issues. "The Arena" can´t be anything else than a cult film in my opinion. Trivia: The film was shot in Italy at Rome's Cincecitta studios in 1973. Both Pam Grier and Margaret Markov did all of their own fights and stunts. The weapons used in the fight scenes were real. Fortunately, nobody got hurt during the filming of the fight scenes. Brian Mckay eFilmCritic.com it drags on after a while, and it's a little light in the skin quotient, with only a few scattered scenes here and there. But dammit, it's half-naked slave girls duking it out with swords. That's gotta be worth 83 minutes of your time Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2003 Full Review Read all reviews
