Anton Bitel Little White Lies with its outright refusal to unpick for the viewer the ambiguities that it has so carefully crafted, this film's insular world of entrapment is far closer to the environs of Marienbad than to any Crystal Lake, Camp Blackfoot or Sorority Row. Aug 21, 2017 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It's probably not even a good film, but fans of slasher flicks will most likely find it a fun film. justin t Very few of the original 'video-nasties' were actually good. This one was definitely not one of the good ones. My biggest disappointment came when I realised that the monster that is shown on the DVD menu only properly shows up in the last minute of the film. So DVD menus have ruined another film for me. Trailers ruin films too sometimes. Like Spiders (2000) told me the ending in the trailer. I hate that. Anyway if you manage to not see the monster before you watch the film then this may be a little better for you. The story bumbles along telling us of nightmares, isolation and killing. It was actually quite gory even though there were only five people to kill off. What also surprised me was that there was actually a bit of atmosphere - just not enough. It was a film of not enough; they just needed more of everything to make it average. It's atmospheric and has some cool kills. It would've been nice to see the monster more though... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a favorite of mine particularly. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The Slayer is a little gem of 80's horror cinema, it's emphasis on pure atmosphere and suspense is a pleasure, it's incredibly patient in it's build up and refusal to show anything. It's all shadows and lighting, blowing wind outside the window, ran beating down, lightening crashing, it feels very old fashioned in it's approach. That's not to say it doesn't deliver the nasty goods, the few death scenes are outlandish gruesome and even a bit weird (a giant fishhook!?) and the build up to each kill is unbearably drawn out, making the bloody payoff somehow relaxing in comparison to the tense waiting. A curious element is that the plot, whether by coincidence or not, is a big time precursor to various elements of A Nightmare On Elm Street, which would come out three years later, these plot points are in fact so similar that it's hard to ignore. There's an eerie doomed, nightmare quality to the film that makes it different to your usual slice and dice, and leaves a lingering, haunting feeling. If you like atmospheric chills, exquisitely crafted suspense and just generally love 80's horror (and if you like horror at all, why would you not?) then you'll love this little gore soaked treasure. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Have you seen the slasher movie Humongous? This is basically the same thing. People are stuck on an island with a killer and the entire thing is so dark that you can't really even make out what is happening on the screen. With such a small cast of characters, the entire thing just dragged with few kills. Even the ones that we do see are not shown in any graphic detail on screen. You may get the indication that there are some nice kills because this movie is a video nasty, but you'd be wrong. For a movie that barely scratched 80 minutes long, it was such a tedious, slow film. It's the same basic plot as Let's Scare Jessica To Death too, which I now have even more of an appreciation for. The last five minutes of The Slayer is so out of left field that it's hilarious. The killer shows up and he looks cool and stupid at the same time. It's laughable and confusing. And then there's the ending... I'll go ahead and put spoiler tags, though you really shouldn't bother with this movie anyway. [Show spoiler] I can't recommend this one. It's just another piece of crap video nasty movie that doesn't live up to that title. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
