Bill T Great story od the events surrounding D Day. James Garner, Eve Marie Saint and Rod Taylor are superb in this film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Aldo G James Garner himself said the problem with the movie was that a knowledge of history ruins the movie's suspense. What remains is the suspense of seeing if the movie's good guys make it out of Germany alive. It could have been handled more effectively and the movie's final scene lacked the emotional wallop it was building towards. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review Paul G I guess it reminded me of Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner which was excellent. Unfortunately the huge setup to convince James Garner the war is over does not last nearly long enough and the film falls back on reasonably common ground. Its original but could have been so much more. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Jeff B I put this on to watch Eva Marie Saint and it was worth the watch. James Garner, Rod Taylor and a surprise actor from Hogan's Heroes made sure the acting was as good as it gets. Before all the CGI and chase scenes with huge explosions, there was just good dialogue and cinematography. I'd recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/23 Full Review ashley h 36 Hours is a fantastic film. It is about Germans who kidnap an American major and try to convince him that World War II is over, so that they can get details about the Allied invasion of Europe out of him. James Garner and Eva Marie Saint give terrific performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. George Seaton did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the mystery. 36 Hours is a must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I’ve always thought there were two kinds of spy films: the hyper-stylized, and the more grounded and realistic ones. 36 Hours is on the fence between the two. It is designed like a more authentic spy film, but the methods of the Germans are so far-fetched they reminded me of Mission: Impossible. I didn’t mind though, because the film does a whole lot with the premise. I loved how they built tension as we wait to see whether the scheme will work, and then we have to hold our breath hoping that the American spy will realize what is happening. That’s a spectacular feat considering everyone already knows how the events of WWII played out. The ending was also thrilling because I didn’t know what would happen to the main characters, but the fact that I had concern the Allies’ plans would be revealed is astounding. James Garner has always come across as an every-man to me, and that fit the role for this film. This isn’t a James Bond style of spy, instead he works covertly spreading misinformation and hiding the truth. I liked Rod Taylor’s performance as well because he has that agreeable demeanor that makes you believe he is trustworthy. I could definitely understand how people would believe what he was saying at all times. Eva Marie Saint has a tough role, and I’m not sure she was entirely effective, but considering her character’s motivation it would be hard to portray the multiple layers of deceit. The story of 36 Hours was presented brilliantly, and I enjoyed the entire film. There were some plot conveniences that felt far-fetched, but that didn’t affect how exciting it was from start to finish. I was hooked most of the way through and dying to see how it would end. It seems, regardless of the style of spy film, I’m probably going to enjoy it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/19 Full Review Read all reviews
