Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly's bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD's new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer's string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) With six Ballard novels to call on, the series is a sturdy procedural, complete with Bosch-friendly cameos, that is trying to very carefully grapple with institutional failings while maintaining a run-and-gun cop show momentum. Rated: 3/5 Aug 18, 2025 Full Review Aramide Tinubu Variety Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, “Ballard” is a thrilling ride from start to finish. Jul 9, 2025 Full Review Gregory Lawrence TheWrap It’s an uncommonly great potboiler with something for everyone. Jul 9, 2025 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network A decent summer series, and like the books it is based on, it is a light and easy watch reminiscent of the novels quickly absorbed during days at the beach. While it may not stick with you in the long run, Ballard is a fun ride while you are on it. Rated: 6/10 Aug 1, 2025 Full Review Srijoni Rudra Digital Mafia Talkies Ballard’s success lies in its simplicity. Instead of a stylized detective show, the creators chose a very ‘no-nonsense’ style of storytelling, and that complements the complex cases that we watch unfold on-screen. Jul 26, 2025 Full Review Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier Slow to start, the series eventually finds its rhythm by the third episode. The cast is what keeps you motivated to continue watching. Marisela A I hope Amazon renews the show it’s so good! I loved season 1. Enjoyed how they worked on different cases and having one main case. I loved all the actors they were great!👍 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Seraphine F Once you get past the 3rd episode, it does take off, a little at a time, and then just keeps building. Many people are comparing this show to Bosch, & they shouldn’t. This is a completely different show, with a female lead, whose gender sets up some totally different topics, and very deep ones at that, for women, especially. Maggie Q, is not a ‘brick’ as some other reviewers have described her. She plays the lead well, when you understand her character’s circumstances. And you learn about these, a little at a time. And that’s just it, you have to give this show time, and if you do, it pays off well. Is it as good as ‘Bosch’? No. Not yet. But again, give it time. It might be in the future. And in the meantime, I enjoyed it enough for me to give it 5 stars. Also, some reviewers have stated that this show is about ‘man-hating’. But of course, it’s NOTHING of the sort. This show deals with some trauma issues that affect so many, but mostly women. And those that can’t “see” this, then what else is there to say to these types with very limited “bandwidth”. With Maggie Q’s engaging lead, smart storytelling, and a clean blend of case-of-the-week structure and overarching intrigue, the series delivers a strong foundation for future seasons. For fans of smart crime dramas and character-driven narratives, Ballard is well worth diving into. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Patricia L I binged watched this series on Amazon. This is a much better adaptation than any Amazon Originals, especially the ridiculous Summer I Became Ugly Series which is all over the place. Where Ballard succeeds with an Asian American actress like Q is that Q is very well-suited for the role as a martial artist and action actor. She excels in this role and the casting is close to the book. Amazon should stick to these thrillers with established actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Michael H Ugghh…I loved Bosch. I grew to really like Bosch Legacy. Ballard is a girl boss show filled with girl boss assistants. Unwatchable garbage made for single women with too many cats. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Edmond W It's a bit flat and lack of heat and not exciting enough for a crime drama. Why would Driscoll and Pearlman both end up attacking Renee so that they could get caught or killed? Doesn't make sense for that level of criminal.
