Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly's bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD's new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer's string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.

Aramide Tinubu Variety Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, “Ballard” is a thrilling ride from start to finish. Jul 9, 2025 Full Review Gregory Lawrence TheWrap It’s an uncommonly great potboiler with something for everyone. Jul 9, 2025 Full Review Sherin Nicole RogerEbert.com If you’re looking for a procedural thriller that’s grounded by grit, genuine leads, and complex cases, “Ballard” gets it done. Jul 7, 2025 Full Review Srijoni Rudra Digital Mafia Talkies Ballard’s success lies in its simplicity. Instead of a stylized detective show, the creators chose a very ‘no-nonsense’ style of storytelling, and that complements the complex cases that we watch unfold on-screen. Jul 26, 2025 Full Review Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier Slow to start, the series eventually finds its rhythm by the third episode. The cast is what keeps you motivated to continue watching. Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk This could all begin to resemble a list of bad-cop clichés, but Ballard is lifted out of the ordinary by its strong cast and the way Ballard’s somewhat motley crew pool their own idiosyncratic talents. Stephen B. I loved this ! Wasn’t sure if I was going to and then after I started it - I was hooked. It’s pretty clean too. Adults can watch it and enjoy it and also teenagers. A great story line too with some great side stories. I’m sure there is gonna be a season 2 ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review J B I was hooked from the start. Good cast and good stories - not Bosch but what is? Maggie Q is stellar. I was 4 stars until the "twist" at the end. It literally made zero sense and hit with thunderous clunk that dumped me right out of the story. It felt like they wanted so badly to have a cliffhanger that they threw logic and common sense out the window. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review David B I was not a big Bosch fan but I really like Maggie Q as an actress. This is some of her very best work. Her portrayal of Ballard is by turns aggressive and tough, tender, wounded, romantic, compassionate, empathic, and protective. She does all of these with believability and draws you in deeper with each episode. I am not a binge watcher. But, I watched the last five episodes of the season back-to-back. It was compelling and nail-biting and I couldn't stop. The writing managed to avoid the most common police drama tropes and felt refreshing and engaging. Ballard is set in a very under-resourced and unrespected tiny cold case unit. Seeing how the cases unfold and some very heart-pounding and heartwarming moments made this series shine. The supporting cast is excellent, particularly John Carroll Lynch, Courtney Taylor, Amy Hill, Michael Mosley, and Noah Bean. Titus Welliver was in three episodes and was also quite effective. The first season ends with a cliff-hanger. Without the assurance of a renewal, I always hate this. Amazon has yet to issue a renewal, despite the stellar reviews and high rate of streaming. Ballard deserves better! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Jack W Maggie Qs best. Captures the tone and feel of the books. The books don't really go into the back stories of the supporting characters, so making a point of showing the orientation of one of the characters seems heavy handed. Thats a minor complaint. Hope to see more. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Maryke B Thoroughly enjoyable. Good twist. I did not watch Bosch but might have to now. Hope they bring out more seasons Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review IlanBoy V Taking an idea like cold case often seen in high quality UK Police dramas exposes the series to just that comparison. In this respect Ballard has promise but I didn’t carry on after a couple of episodes Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
