Critics Consensus

While superbly acted and stylishly filmed, Hannibal lacks the character interaction between the two leads which made the first movie so engrossing.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal All of this opulence, together with extravagant set-pieces that go past grisly to grotesque (and then, in the climax, on to goony), can't compensate for the halting pace of a patchy script. Jul 15, 2023 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Hannibal doesn't seem to be about anything but its own swank decadence. Hopkins, with his reedy voice and effete airs, is still quite delicious in the part that won him an Oscar. But 10 years later, Lecter has become more camp than terrifying. Mar 6, 2018 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com No tension, no rhythm and no sense of purpose ... unless you count helping "Faces of Death" fans feel more evolved. Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia I find its sequel tasteless and I'm sure that, ironically, not even Hannibal Lecter would serve it cold. João Victor M I really liked the movie, but I do have a few considerations. Clarice Starling, now portrayed by Julianne Moore, feels very different. Of course, ten years have passed since the first film, both in real life and in the story, but I still feel like it didn’t quite fit. It seems like a completely different officer, not the true Clarice. That said, Gary Oldman’s performance as Mason Verger was excellent, and the makeup in this film was flawless. Speaking of Inspector Rinaldo, portrayed by Giancarlo Giannini, I thought the casting was a very interesting choice. His character arc was well-developed, showing how his love for money outweighed his principles. I liked that, even though his ending wasn’t the most positive. Towards the end of the film, I think things got a bit off-track. I agree there are moments that suggest a potential relationship between Hannibal and Clarice, or maybe even a romanticization of it, but we had the twist that this wasn’t really the case, which worked. However, I think the lobotomy scene was presented in a rather exaggerated and inconsistent way. It felt like they forgot it was a movie and just focused too much on the visual impact, something that had already been impressively conveyed with Hannibal’s victim. Overall, the way they built the search for Hannibal and other plot elements was very well done, and the director did a great job with the storytelling. I just think the lobotomy part could’ve been more restrained. The acting was fabulous throughout, but as has ben noted, the gory action goes from gross to grotesque to camp in three minutes. Hannibal feeding a curious child fried brain is in the end more silly than scary. I hope the third film is a return to form, but I doubt it will, but I've signed on for the full ride. Orin D. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Chris D There is a limit to a person's genius, in this movie, Lecter escapes and evades and out manuervuers, with some luck too, like some sort of magical being, emphasised by the conclusion (spoilers), should be bleeding heavily and not exactly young, somehow manages to end up on a flight to the far east. Every airport would have his picture and be looking for a one handed man who somehow always has money to move around, it's so blasé with the details, it's ludicrous and never concluded as the mass murderer lives happily ever after. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Mate P Hannibal is a boring and unnecessary sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. I say this knowing that this movie came after Thomas Harris wrote the novel. The writing is flawed, the story is predictable and boring, sometimes confusing and rushed dialogues. I don't like it when all the necessary information is thrown at the audience during one conversation. The dialogue-writing is not bad though, there are also good ones, but nothing stands out or approaches the level of the dialogues in its predecessor. Clarice's character became boring, while Hannibal remained interesting. The reason I don't dislike this movie more is because of the pretty good cinematography and directing. The pacing could've been a lot better, as I said sometimes we got all the information at once, sometimes nothing really happened. The one thing I liked more in this movie is the score, Hans Zimmer nailed it, I was genuinely surprised how different it was from his other scores. The acting performances were great, Anthony Hopkins was great, Julianne Moore is a good actress, but Clarice didn't feel like the same character to me as she was in the movie before. I loved to see Giancarlo Giannini, he played one of my favourite characters in Daniel Craig's James Bond era. Hannibal wasn't a great experience for me, the worst thing is that I don't really want to watch the next movie (Red Dragon). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Audience Member The film doesn't know if it wants to adapt the book it is based upon accurately or be a worthy sequel to The Silence of the Lambs film. Either way, it comes off as confusing, awkwardly-paced, and overall a poor effort to heighten the thrills of the original film. The only thing that Hannibal (2001) truly cannibalizes is the audience's good faith Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
