Despite arresting visuals and strong lead performances, The New World suffers from an unfocused narrative that will challenge viewers' attention spans over its 2 1/2 hours.

KB B It had some stunning cinematography and good acting with a decent storyline. It was awful long they could have trimmed a few of the scenes. watch if there's nothing else on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review JP L It's alright. Good acting all around, and stellar set design. But on the other hand, it feels a bit pretentious and isn't terribly well written. The main romance (which is agreed by historians to never have happened) consists mainly of the two leads frolicking about and staring at each other without actually talking. The whole movie just drags on. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Nathan T I saw The New World when it first came out in 2005 as a teenager. I have now seen it twice since and the Extended Version (which is the Director's preferred cut) is even a little bit superior to the theatrical cut, as it explores some of the relationships in a little bit more depth. I had remembered the movie having a couple of flaws which I didn't find to be as prevalent this time around. The New World is a mesmerizingly gorgeous film which I really like. There are times where I feel as though Malick would have benefitted from having a writer involved who could help him keep the story concise along the central plot, but it still works well. Still a really good movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Alec B The perfect story for Malick as all of his trademark stylistic and narrative choices only enhance your immersion in this world. Catherine Shoard Daily Telegraph (UK) All [Malick's] trademarks are present and correct: the swaying grass, the gurgling rivers, the trees, the birds, the internal monologues. They all fit.
