Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Takes too many liberties with the meaning of reincarnation--making it into a gross literal reality. Rated: B- Oct 15, 2012 Full Review Steve Biodrowski ESplatter Shimizu's prodigious talent as a scare-master are still on display, so the film features a handful of virtuoso sequences. Audience Member Definitely "Grudge" feel for this Japanese tale about the reincarnation of a serial killing dad that can kill and film on a Super8. The overlapping of stories is pretty smart, and dolls are creepy, but the 20 minutes of constant fake stumbling by the actress at the end was a dud. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as good as I was hoping for given the director's filmography, but still enjoyable enough. Not as scary as I was hoping it would be. The plot is decent. The acting is really good. Overall I enjoyed the movie but not enough to recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Actually scared me a bit Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The fact that many of the negative reviews for this say it doesn't make sense is laughable. Pay attention, America. This clever and disturbing Japanese Horror gem may be highly stylized and "weird," but it's not that hard to "get" if your attention to detail is even slightly below average. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The visual storytelling in this movie blew me away. Shimizu and his team were so very good at their job. However, there were parts of the story that held this movie back. If the writing had matched the quality of visual story telling, this movie would be phenomenal. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Together Forever. Think Asian version of The Shining and you have Rinne or Reincarnation. This is one of the better finds on the ol' Netflix. I never even knew that this film existed until now and it's directed by Takeshi Shimizu who also made one of my favorite horror films, Ju-On (The Grudge). Like most J-Horror Rinne is very surrealistic and the supernatural entities are unstoppable forces of nature. Every scene is just steeped in atmosphere and at times it does get really creepy. I liked though how this film wasn't about the girl with the long hair, there are girls with long hair, but the film is more about other ghosts, and memories, and going absolutely bonkers. It's a fun film about a crew of people making a film about murders that happened in a hotel a long time ago. If you're into J-Horror or you like surreal films check out Rinne.
