Audience Member First 45 minutes are a (poor) comedy but then it suddenly switches to nervous REC style war images that are truly horrifying, the movie switches from comedy to horror in a flash of a second. The images afterwards, in a hospital treating and operating soldiers with war injuries, are gruesome as well. It's based on a true story but although it won prizes in Venice I really didn't like this movie at all. Over acting by the lead, lousy screenplay that doesnt develop any of the characters, pointless premise.. an unfulfilling watch for me. Sub par cinematography. Those first person shaky handshots were pointless and used inappropriately for scenes that didnt require first person. The lead character is a film student but handles the camera like a tourist with his first ever camera. Irritated not by the war theme but a shitty movie. Gave me headache as well. In attesa della vera occasione, si diletta facendo il filmmaker nei centri sociali, lontano dalle responsabilità degli adulti, finché il regista Stefano Rolla chiede a sua madre i fondi per girare un film ambientato in Iraq e gli propone il ruolo di assistente. Accetta frettolosamente la proposta contro il volere di tutti, genitori e amici, tra cui la migliore amica Claudia, di cui è inconsciamente innamorato. All'indomani del suo arrivo in Iraq, dopo aver fumato appena un pacchetto di sigarette, si trova vittima dell'attentato terroristico del 12 novembre 2003 a Nasiriyya. Gravemente ferito riesce, diversamente dall'amico Rolla e dei militari della loro scorta, a scampare alla morte, venendo curato in un ospedale da campo dell'esercito americano. Una volta rientrato in Italia viene ricoverato all'ospedale militare del Celio dove è soggetto all'assalto dei giornalisti ed alle fredde visite ufficiali, reagendo sdegnato alla ricostruzione ufficiale dell'attentato, scoprendo anche che quella che lui considerava una sparatoria non era altro che l'espolosione della riservetta delle munizioni, piazzata colpevolemente non protetta nelle vicinanze dell'ingresso della base. Due anni dopo egli troverà il coraggio di raccontare la sua storia nel romanzo Venti sigarette a Nassiryya, anche grazie al supporto di Claudia, nel frattempo è diventata madre di sua figlia, rimanendo tuttavia invalido alla gamba sinistra, soggetto a sordità all'orecchio sinistro e perseguitato dagli atroci ricordi della strage, che si manifestano attraverso attacchi di panico.
