Tom W Visually very lyrical. The deliberately slow pacing of the direction gradually draws you in to a very haunting tale. Kathy Kiera Clarke steals every scene she is in with a controlled and meaningful performance, but the other characters seem thinly drawn. Ultimately, however, the film lacks something. The idea of an ex-pat writer returning to confront the ghosts of his past doesn't really work when that past is so thinly sketched. The mid-film archive footage of 'the troubles' sits uncomfortably as though thrown in at the last minute in an attempt to give Matt Donnelly's past some body. But it remains disconnected, even though one of the characters is revealed to be a brutal ex-gunman. By the time the film finishes there are just too many loose ends and unanswered questions. The suddenness of Donnelly's decision to return to America is abrupt and frankly unexplained. Can't help thinking that perhaps too much was cut out of either the film or the screenplay at some stage, leaving a visually arresting but unsatisfactory film experience.
