In the 1960s, Afghan women were granted new rights and freedoms, but the Taliban's later rise to power confined them to servitude and oppression. This documentary follows three independent-minded women from 2000 to 2003. Teacher Shapiray Hassan and doctor Roeena Mohmand both work at a refugee camp in Pakistan, while Wajia advocates for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. All three struggle to establish equality for women in contemporary Afghan society.

Audience Member Afghani women are crazy oppressed! This ain't right. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Essential viewing! Was screened in Berlin recently as part of a presentation done by a touring Afgani woman from RAWA, who was raising awareness of her organisation and the situation of people both in Afganistan and in refugee camps in Pakistan. The film was excrutiatingly painful in parts, because it's a documentary and not fiction, but other parts showed hope and human triumph in the face of adversity. Check out the film and RAWA: http://www.rawa.org/rawa.html Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member A solid documentary. Thought-provoking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A great presentation about the situation of Afghani women during war and post-war times. It also clears off the common misconception of Taliban being the root-cause of repression. They just made the situation worst. It's sad to see this all happening in the name of Islam. The documentary particularly touches the lives of three women who manage to survive and make a difference despite all difficulties but the sorry part is that two of them have decided never to go back to Afghanistan...is it not a shame for those who carry the flag of Islam that they have made two individuals so fearful of their own homeland...forced them to be away for the rest of their lives... It definitely is something that history itself would be shameful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member This is an excellent and very powerful documentary on the situation for women in Afghanistan over the course of the last 25 years. The documentary tracks the lives of three individual Afghani women - a doctor, a teacher, and a political activist. The story of each provides a glimpse into the very complicated recent history of the country of Afghanistan. This movie is not that easy to get a hold of, but if you ever get a chance to watch this, then do it. This is a fantastic documentary and an absolute must-see for everyone, in my opinion.
