Dennis Harvey Variety Michael Polish’s film gamely tries to compensate for unspectacular production values with a lot of action -- but its staging is pedestrian at best. Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com [Stallone's] work here makes his appearance in “The Expendables 4” seem focused and committed by comparison. Rated: 1/4 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Traversing bleakly undifferentiated East European locations, the bullet-riddled plot is a flavorless tossed salad of code names and cleaning crews, drone strikes and shootouts. Not sure even the appearance of California ambassador to international box office will wake us up from realizing it comes from one-time indie darling, Michael Polish. Rated: 1/4 Jan 21, 2025 Full Review Brittany Frederick CBR There's a good action movie in this, but it never emerges because everything is so convoluted. Rated: 3/10 Jan 20, 2025 Full Review Ben Gibbons Screen Rant Alarum may have a solid premise and cast, but the fun stops with this subpar action thriller that fails to tap into the talent's potential. alan g Was done many times before and always better. How much money did Clint put up to get his son work? Stallone is a shell of his former self. Very sad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Jason R Sylvester Stallone looks like a wax sculpture of Sylvester Stallone. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Kelly G The story was nearly nonexistant. The slaphappy unfolding of events is supposed to be loosely woven together around "ALARUM" which is a private espionage group of rogue/retired agents who sorta kinda may be working for the greater good against the worlds Espionage agencies and Governments and Terrorist factions that work with and for them? Maybe? Because they kinda almost imply that, without ever saying it, They never deal with who really is working for whom, or against whom, or why? Are Alarum really good guys? Bad guys? Do they actually have any plan or they are just in it for money? Mike Colter's character was sorta the bad guy, but of course we never hear or find out who he was working for or what his real plan was, only that he was on the plane and he worked for somebody, and someone on the plane was there to kill him, so he killed them 1st, but apparently forgot or didnt have time to get THE FLIGHT PILL and needed it back later? But we never find out what exactly it was, or who wanted it, or why the DEA even HAD IT/NEEDED IT? They implied that "half the masks" were at risk, which might(?) mean half americas undercover operatives IDs were on that drive? which why the Drug Enforcement Agency would have such a list...or give it to a pilot who was actually an assassin (DEA doesnt do Assassins do they?) to transport by swallowing it...to take it who knows where for any reason? But that was almost as bad as Stallone. Who was basically an assassin, who had no qualms about killing his former friend, or his pilot for no reason at all (Pilots really didnt do well in this film) and then murder his former buddy using a secret poison that takes 12 hours, rather than...say a gun or something that actually works. Because it makes so much sense to tell a deadly assassin you were sent to kill that you have just poisoned him and then expect he will take it well and trust you afterwards and spend his final hours helping you kill the guy who may kill his wife before he dies. Why wouldnt he kill YOU and then kill the guy himself? This movie was stupid, confusing, poorly written, poorly directed, and generally a bad film in most ways. Even Stallone and Eastwood (Who 10 years into his career is still searching for a defining role to really push him to A list...and this definitely isnt it!)...neither could do anything to rescue this. It was a bad movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review SkyRo P "Alarum," set to release in 2025, features Sylvester Stallone in an action-packed role alongside Scott Eastwood, Mike Colter, and Willa Fitzgerald. The film revolves around various government factions collaborating on a mission to retrieve a flash drive, only to find themselves sabotaging one another amid chaotic confrontations. Watching the film felt akin to viewing an overly monochromatic flick, devoid of any real quality. The script was subpar at best. It's unclear why Stallone chose to be part of this project, as the attempts to reinstate him as a formidable action hero fell flat; his character had minimal impact and barely contributed to the narrative. There was little to no depth, and he didn’t even come across as particularly clever compared to the other characters. Willa Fitzgerald's portrayal seemed miscast in an action-oriented role. While she appeared to be positioned as the next big female action star, akin to Angelina Jolie or Scarlett Johansson, she lacked the necessary strength to convincingly face off against the larger male characters. Both her and Scott's characters, intended to be highly skilled assassins, often found themselves outmatched, which was disheartening compared to the expectations set for their roles. In the end, the film fell disappointingly short of expectations. I regretted spending money on it, as I usually enjoy films without cost. This time, however, I had to pay for a lackluster experience that was neither well-written nor well-directed. It's disheartening to think about how much effort and money go into making films that fail to deliver, especially when audiences are investing in the hope of enjoying at least a decent movie. By 2025, one would expect a higher standard of filmmaking, yet here we are with another underwhelming release.
