Critics Consensus

Inept on almost every level, Alone in the Dark may not work as a thriller, but it's good for some head-slapping, incredulous laughter.

bill k a disgraceful insult to every film fan, lover and everyone who knows of motion picutre arts Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review John D It's a popcorn movie and an enjoyable watch that doesn't deserve all the low ratings and criticsm. The script and direction are coherent and competently done. The leads actors perform capably. Just chill and enjoy. (Please note that I watched Alone In The Dark 2 and then went back to watch the first). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Fabio L I am not sure why everybody seems to have a problem with this movie. Watch it, don't be influenced by the reviews. It's absolutely decent and enjoyable for everyone. It reminds me of movies like Event Horizon where everyone was criticising it but is actually an excellent movie. Alone in the dark falls in this category. Movies that for some reasons people lie about. You will see many more movie with better ratings of this one that are absolutely obscene to watch. But not Alone in the dark. This is a good movie, don't miss it. Does it deserve 5 stars? Start asking yourself if it deserves 1, like many reviews here gave to it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Andy B I only became aware of the name Uwe Boll a year ago. I don’t know how I’d missed him,but I’ve started to think that I was living in some dream dimension where dire film makers do not exist. Obviously, I have transgressed some unwritten law and now I am unfortunately here where the Boll exists. Uwe Boll has a talent. He can take good actors and make them bad. He can take bad ideas and make them dire. He can take poor scripts and make them appalling. What elevates his talent to the level of genius is that he seems to be blissfully unaware of his cataclysmic lack of talent. Alone in the Dark is the epitome of his poor film-making. There are absolutely no redeeming features to this film. It is dire beyond belief. I’m surprised that anyone involved in this film ever worked again. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Dan R Based loosely on the computer game series of the same name, 2005's 'Alone in the Dark' is rightly hailed as one of the worst films of all time. SYNOPSIS: 'A detective of the paranormal slowly unravels mysterious events with deadly results.' This is just terrible. It's worse than TV movie bad, and really only had a tenuous link to it's source material if that's why you're here. I bet you're sorry now aren't you? It uses violence for violence sake to shock and hold an audience. But it's not working sorry. Considering some of the high profile names of the cast, they should be ashamed of themselves for these totally pathetic performances. And the monsters? Yuck. Go away. Burn this with fire and destroy every digital copy in the world. It's a true punishment to watch this. 1/10 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Carson P Oh yess this movie is that bad it's as bad as everyone has said leave it to an untalented hack like uwe boll to get Christian slater and Tara Reid and Stephen dorff to give the most laughably awful performances in one of the most laughably awful movies ever alone in the dark is so cheap looking and so ameatuerishly made that it's the perfect example of what incompetent filmmaking is especially in the sci fi action horror genre nothing about this movie was good the plot made no sense starting off as something that could be interesting but right away gets incomprehensible from some unorthodox dream sequence to a poorly staged chase scene nothing is explained of how that old man who looked like he managed to save from an apocalypse of monsters ruling the earth later becomes their leader the action is so poorly shot and the chemistry between the actors is nonexistent I don't know how any great actor would sign on for this but I heard Christian bale was actually almost set to be in the film but didn't end up and that's a sigh of relief I don't want a talented actor to star in a movie this god""" awful he must have read the script and declined being in it like he would have said what Daniel stern said when declining being in home alone 4 saying it's an insult and total garbage and that is what alone in the dark from 2005 is it's an atrocious piece of garbage and the worst film ever made next to battlefield earth, manos and plan 9 not even those heavy metal songs made this film be any cool there wasn't even a single cool moment or even a scene soo bad it's amusing it was just plain terrible and the film is soo bad it's bad and even worse the ending Made no sense at all how did the city get evacuated and what was that thing running at slater and Reid did they even save the earth from monster apocalypse but in the end we may not even care as this film has no engaging charachters or a storyline that makes sense whatsoever it's no wonder why uwe boll is considered the worst director of all time he has not made a single good movie not even rampage was good considering it was direct to dvd and direct to dvd films are trash this film itself should have been released straight to dvd it's not cinemetic worthy whatsoever it must not be seen by any film fan or anyone who wants to se good films or is a fan of masterpieces like godfather or saving private Ryan or lord of the rings or Casablanca and many others this is a movie bad on every aspect and only those who like bad movies that are as bad as battlefield earth would not mind it but that doesn't mean anything this film is an atrocious piece of garbage at of course gets a big fat F- Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
