Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com An underrated gem, Angst is a fascinatingly morbid exercise depicting the grotesque capabilities of the disturbed. Beautifully photographed, it's an eerie exercise and puts Kargl in a unique category of one title auteurs. Oct 20, 2020 Full Review C.H. Hans V Horrible, uncomfortable, shocking!!! A fairly "ordinary" individual shows up at a house he randomly chose, and without much forethought, knocks on the door. An old woman he'd never had contact with before kindly opens the door and... Poo-hoo!!! She's murdered in cold blood and for no apparent reason... This is how brutal this film by Gerald Kargl is, immersing us in the distorted mind of a psychopath. Its third-person shots, filmed like a GoPro, before GoPros existed, take us on this murderer's journey, making us "absent" witnesses of his actions, while his mind, invaded by fear and his childhood traumas, tells us his story and the feelings he experiences with each of his victims, in a very violent and uncomfortable way for the audience. Based on the tragic events perpetrated by Werner Kniesek in St. Pölten, Austria in 1980, Gerald Kargl's Angst takes us into the darkest reaches of the human psyche, terrifying and unsettling us for 87 violent and horrifying minutes. So, if you're looking to be horrified in these pre-Halloween times by a film that's out of the ordinary, outside of Hollywood clichés and rules, take the risk and see it, but beware, at your own risk! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Steve K Disturbingly photographed mentally ill twists and turns Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Wayne K Much like Psycho or Peeping Tom, Angst is a film that disgusted its audience by making them empathise with its focal killer, the individual they would usually despise and want to be as far away as possible. With unique camerawork and a fantastic lead performance from Erwin Leder, we get to see the atrocities from the killers perspective, observing his reactions in graphic detail. I'm a bit confused by people who deride the film for being too violent, since its far tamer than most films of this nature, but since it came out in 1983 I can only assume its because movies this dark weren't as common back then. The element I enjoyed about it the most was how it depicted the killers methods. Rather than being cold, calculating and brutally efficient, Leder plays him as clumsy, awkward and emotional, failing constantly and losing his sanity right before our eyes. An honourable mention should go to a light car crash scene that occurs towards the end that got a far bigger laugh out of me than it maybe should have. I didn't care much for the main score, since it becomes mind numbingly repetitive after a while, but overall it's a fascinating examination of a killers mind and his motives, and the fact that its based on a real life case gives it an extra layer of terror. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Bruno S Perturbador,nu e cru. Angst e incrivelmente imersivo te fazendo mergulhar na psique do seu personagem principal, esse e um filme de estudo de personagem e ao mesmo tempo, narra uma terrível história real Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review richard t It's a striking film, quite direct and straight-forward, with an incredible pace and tension. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Totally unique & very brutal film about a nameless killer who is released from prison and immediately invades another home where an elderly woman, her daughter and wheelchair bound son live. Erwin Leder's performance is astonishingly tense and all while barely speaking & yet narrating the film. The camerawork is a stunning achievement even by today's standards and the score is oddly perfect. It does feel stretched at times for an 83 minute film, but then again the events of the film are pretty much in real time. Super effective & disturbing. Note: not be for the squeamish.
