Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter The title is the cleverest thing about this minor indie portrait of sexual confusion. Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Smart without being smart-alecky, Mr. Rosen's writing avoids the aggressive cleverness and gummy politics of many similarly themed movies, focusing instead on realistic dialogue and low-key interaction. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety A low-key comedy high on charm and credible twentysomething observation. Jun 4, 2009 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru Mildly engaging with an initially intriguing premise and brief moments of wittiness, but ultimately falls flat as a drama. Its bland protagonist, along with a lazy, unimaginative screenplay, leaves you feeling unmoved and underwhelmed. Rated: 5.0/10 Jun 7, 2009 Full Review Fr. Chris Carpenter Orange County and Long Beach Blade The director's inexperience shows at times...but his writing and acting are fine. Indeed, everyone in the cast is quite good. Audience Member With surprisingly good acting and a smart script, The Art of Being Straight takes a nuanced approach to young adults' struggles with sexuality issues. The film failed to significantly grapple with issues of how the other people in the characters' lives might react and the impact of that reaction, which is unfortunate because it leaves the film feeling incomplete. Nevertheless, the film is funny, intelligent and well worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Audience Member NO ART... in this movie. Jesse Rosen is cute, that's basically all there is to it in the movie (although I thought they history professor was way hotter, but that's my taste). It's a lame coming out story, the acting is terrible (the scene where he comes out to his best friend comes to mind...he looked like he was about to burst out laughing because he was telling a hilarious joke), the dialogue makes no sense most of the time, and the end must have stayed in the editing room because the movie simply dropped off. It had been quite a while since I had seen such a bad movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member For a genre that is typically over-dramaticised, The Art of Being Straight felt surprisingly genuine. Lifestyle choices, beginning with a thought and ending in a decision, aren't made in a couple weeks. Rather than offering resolutions to the questions posed in the film, the director acknowledges the reality of the situation by leaving room for interpretation. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member I absolutely understand gay & lesbian genre is usually low-budget, non-mainstream productions. But can the producers at least be more decent- in terms of attitude & productions? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved this film's awkward, art-school approach. Feels like an instant classic.
