Daryl MacDonald InSession Film What matters is the chemistry Izawa and Takaishi bring to the screen, and how they elevate what could have been another paint-by-numbers action movie into something a little more unique. Matthew D Gen Z teenagers are just too awkward to hold down a job, but they can be killers for hire! Director Yugo Sakamoto’s Japanese action-comedy Baby Assassins (2021) has plenty of silly jokes bookended by two crazy martial arts fights. It’s mostly just a sweet slice of life coming of age comedy that is sure to be relatable to younger viewers. Sakamoto’s direction lets us get to know these goofy teenage girls just trying to pay rent besides carrying out hits. His two fist fights are intricately directed with style by Sakamoto and choreographed by Kensuke Sonomura. The final fight is legit insane and just keeps going. I’d happily watch Baby Assassins 2. Writer Yugo Sakamoto’s charming screenplay boasts many joking references to anime and pop culture. I had a blast hearing all these funny turns of phrases and silly physical comedy. I hope the sequel dives deeper into this world of young assassins and the Yakuza. Sakamoto feels like he is making fun of the endless inconveniences of unemployment, job applications, job interviews, part-time jobs, paying rent, fitting into society, filing tax returns, cleaning up corpses, and getting along with your roommate. Editor Yugo Sakamoto’s sharp cutting gives us several cute montages of the girls cooking, eating, and training. I like how swiftly the action moves. I loved the cinematography of nighttime Japan by Moritada Iju. The pretty makeup by AKAI Mizuki is lovely. All the fresh outfits are really fun to look at, especially for all the girl characters. The hyper anime music and J-Pop in the backdrop is very exciting and dreamy. I love how the action scenes feature really intense J-Rock songs for a hardened atmosphere. Saori Izawa’s awkward and shy assassin Mahiro is interesting. She’s basically a sociopath, who when presented to other people, is simply too cringe to exist. She’s such a funny parody of a Gen Z teenager. Her two martial arts fights feature insane skill and acrobatics. The final duel shocked me honestly. Akari Takaishi is adorable, hilarious, playful, cool, and fierce as the fun loving assassin Chisato. She’s such a delight to watch with her outgoing energy and curious nature. Her wanting to shoot people with her pistol and machine gun is very funny. Mone Akitani’s young Yakuza girl Himari Hamaoka is so excitable and entertaining. I had fun watching her interrogation scenes. Yasukaze Motomiya’s Yakuza boss Ippei Hamaoka is intense and scary as the main villain. Satoshi Uekiya’s belittled Yakuza brother Kazuki Hamaoka is very funny. Nagiko Tsuji is cute as the girl from the bar. Masanori Mimoto is incredible as the Yakuza heavy Watabe. Overall, Baby Assassins is exceedingly simple, serene, and outlandish in its playful humor with some ferocious fighting on the side. It’s a very amusing 95 minutes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Andy B Very silly. The fight scenes are pretty good but the rest is meandering filler which makes little sense. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review Dan D This was fun. Who knew a slacker, action comedy about teenage assassin's would be so entertaining to watch. The two leading ladies have great chemistry and the fight scenes are superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review kailsah s Low budgeted movie. Don't know why the killer's survived at the end of movie's. Passing bad messages to the young generation. Any killer must get punished for their's crimes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review Tom T Hidden little gem right here. Two Gen Z assassins cross paths with a quirky Yokuza family. The main story arc involving the girls search to find themselves is entertaining enough to carry it.
