      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Babylon's overwhelming muchness is exhausting, but much like the industry it honors, its well-acted, well-crafted glitz and glamour can often be an effective distraction.

      Audience Consensus

Babylon has some entertaining moments and its ambition is impressive, but the movie's chaotic and disjointed execution makes it difficult to really enjoy.

Aaron This movie held my attention the whole entire time. I did not look at my phone once nor leave for a bathroom break. The movie was just too good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Michael Inside Babylon exists a wonderful and illuminating story about the dawn of modern filmmaking and its transition from talkies. Unfortunately, the writer and director (Damien Sayre Chazelle) never got or heeded the memo about killing darlings through bold editing. His insistence on adding gratuitous scenes that stray from the central theme, trying to out-Tarantino Tarantino with distractions about the depraved underbelly of the times, taints what otherwise could have been a pretty damn good film. The storyline deserved better (and less than three hours and nine minutes on the screen). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Pamila Great performances, Especially Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, and Brad Pitt. Good story, a bit tragic. Cinematography is amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Dont Waster Your Time Terrible. There was no story and its three and a half hours long. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Darin L I loved it. Robbie was perfect, Pitt is always 100% right for his part. I loved 20’s Hollywood. Well made. I hate DC and Marvel, finally something for the adults at the movies… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Tyler R I loved this movie so much. Saw it a couple days ago. I can’t stop thinking about it. Absolutely captivating and gripping performances by the entire cast! Incredible sequences. Humor and heart. Justin’s score is insane. Damien is in the POCKET here. I think it’ll be fondly looked back on one day. I really don’t get the hate for this movie. One of the best movies about movie making I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to own it. David Stratton The Australian Attempts to out-Fellini Fellini are regrettable and for much of its length Babylon is an unsubtle and indigestible mess so that despite all the talent involved and the fascinating subject matter, it must be seen as something of a disaster. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 27, 2023 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Subtle it is not. Nor is it good. Rated: 2/5 Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Chazelle’s film commemorates the era’s hubris as it indulges in a bit of its own. This is how a world ends. Not with a whimper but a great deal of banging, baby. And vomiting. And snorting. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 21, 2023 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Ultimately a condemnation of the Hollywood machine that crushes everyone with equitable cruelty and an ode to the innovative artistry and ineffable magic of the movies, whose siren call continues to lure audiences & filmmakers alike towards its warm glow. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Manik Sharma Firstpost Babylon isn't all bust, or even unwatchable, it is just overlong, overindulgent with nary a care... Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Nicolás Medina Montevideo Portal / Latido Beat Babylon is provocative, but, at the same time, it highlights what almost serves as a thematic watermark in Chazelle's filmography: choosing success often means choosing suffering or torture.
