Giuseppe Sedia Kino Mania Piszczyk goes from prisoner of war to Party desk-jockey. Drifting like a leaf through events, he only survives the bombing of a cabbage field thanks to his lucky cowardice. In this movie Munk pays homage to the golden age of slapstick film. Audience Member it's said that comedy doesn't travel but this polish film is one of the funniest foreign films i have seen. like a comedic version of 'il conformista', it chronicles one man's attempts to fit in, be successful, meet women and find happiness, all of which come to nought as in his view, he is constantly plagued with bad luck. the film covers a lot of ground historically including the years before, during and after ww2 and plays as a satire on poland's heroic view of itself. a bit slapstick for me or i'd give it 5 stars easily. great work by director munk Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A pretty good comedy with political undertones. As is often the case with Polish films, I felt like a lot of the politics went over my head. It didn't help that there were no subtitles for any of the signage in the movie -- lots of untranslated banners, posters, and newspapers obviously carried some kind of meaning, but it wasn't always easy to decipher from the context. There seemed to be some criticism of the Communist Party (Piszczyk's colleagues are suspicious of him for being too enthusiastic), but it was made while the Communists were in power... so maybe not? Perhaps the Party in Poland wasn't as oppressive as elsewhere. As a comedy, it works quite well. Piszczyk's "bad luck" is largely the result of his own cowardice, deception, pride and duplicity. There's a lot of amusing editing tricks, and Piszczyk's childhood is told as an old-style nickelodeon one-reeler. Kobiela is a very good comic actor, and the rest of the cast is just fine too. Roman Polanski, who was an assistant director on the film, has a tiny role, but since you only see him from far away you'd never know it was him. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This goes on a bit too long, but much of this is brilliant and hilariously hopeless. It tells the story of Jan, a shallow and ignorant man, who drifts through decades of Polish history without any real understanding of his actions. Part slapstick comedy, part moral tale, the film suggests that national history progresses not by way of self-sacrifice and heroics but by cowardice and self-delusion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautifully told and funny sweet-and-sour tale about a vain man caught up in difficult times. Yet another testimony to the difficult and ambiguous history of Poland in the 20th century. However, this is not pathetic tale of national virtue- Munk is uncompromising and unafraid to question sacred truths. Though the movie falls short of packing a knockout punch with it's ending, it remains a monumental example of how a brave filmmaker can defy the system in which he operates and create a cinematic masterpiece. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow and not very exciting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Seinfeld: Season 3 Finally worked up the courage to pick up the second volume of one of the greatest sitcoms ever to grace the small screen. It was fun strolling down memory lane with four of my favorite tour guides. The more I watch eps of Seinfeld, the more I am convinced I am a personality clone of George. Quite sad, really. Hoop Dreams A solid, inspirational, and moving documentary that is about so much more than Basketball. Dark Water Not a bad horror flick. Definitely a lot better than some of the other taint stained horror flicks to come out this year. A great performance by Connelly (as usual) and McGinley is in fine form as well. Some amjor pacing issues, but overall, not bad. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
