What to Know

Critics Consensus

Carried along by Owen Wilson's laconic charm, Stick is a sports comedy that putts predictably but accomplishes its aim of gentle entertainment commendably under par.

John Nugent Empire Magazine This golfing comedy is just about on par — but it could have taken a bigger swing and move beyond the usual sporting stereotypes. Still, Owen Wilson shines. Rated: 3/5 Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Tim Glanfield The Times (UK) Like Ted Lasso, this is a story that is unafraid to take its flawed characters on an emotionally charged comedic flight over fairway and rough, through the woods and into bunkers, before leaving them all a putt at happiness. Rated: 4/5 Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday Owen Wilson makes it work. Rated: 3/4 Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network With solid cameos from some famous golfers, intense sports sequences that raise the intensity, and a heartfelt core story about redemption and love, Stick is the perfect successor to Ted Lasso and is sure to be a big hit with fans. I loved this series. Rated: 9/10 Jun 26, 2025 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ Yes, it’s essentially Tin Cup-meets-Ted Lasso, but it boasts the crowd-pleasing charm and chutzpah of both the ’90s Kevin Costner golf romance and the feel-good football dramedy. Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Josh Bell The Inlander (Spokane, WA) It's resolutely mediocre, playing out the tired beats of an inspirational sports movie over the course of 10 sluggish episodes. M K This might be the worst show I’ve ever seen. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review The P The storyline and concept of the show started off strong and genuinely original—especially for a niche like golf, which is rarely given proper attention in TV series. It was a refreshing idea that had the potential to stand out and really connect with viewers looking for something different. For the first few episodes, the show was engaging, well-paced, and built around interesting characters and a solid plot. But then, in episode four, things changed. The introduction of a “she/they” character signalled a shift in direction. I understand that shows are trying to be more inclusive these days, but the way it was done here felt forced and out of place. Instead of fitting naturally into the story, it felt like a clear political message was being inserted, and it started to overshadow the original plot. Episodes four and five focused heavily on two female characters trying to prove themselves as strong, independent women—but it came across as unnatural and, honestly, a bit cringey. The show seemed more focused on pushing a social agenda than telling the story it started with. The political tone was obvious—leaning heavily to the left, promoting modern feminism while subtly putting down other characters, especially Owen Wilson’s character, who up to that point had been kind, wise, and really enjoyable to watch. There’s one scene in particular where Owen’s character tries to give Santi a motivational talk—encouraging him, being firm but fair—and Santi reacts by storming off like a modern-day “snowflake,” which felt ridiculous and out of character. The emotional reactions started to feel exaggerated, unrealistic, and unrelated to the main plot. What’s disappointing is that the show had so much potential. The original idea is still great, but they took a detour into unnecessary drama and over-the-top social commentary. It could’ve been something really memorable, but instead, it’s been weighed down by political messaging that didn’t need to be there. All in all, I’m disappointed—not because of diverse characters or different views, but because they hijacked a great story for a message that didn’t fit the tone or purpose of the series. It’s a shame, because it could’ve been something truly special. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review David M Really fun to see Owen Wilson back where he should be, in a feel good comedy. Loved it. Really hope there is a season 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Bella S Beautifully written and such a pleasure to watch Wilson at his best, funny, and sweet with an underlying pathos. He brings an authenticity and presence that is heartening to witness. It's so refreshing to see a flurry of series like Ted Lasso, Shrinking and this that help to process male grief through entertainment. Keep it up Apple TV! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Jeff P This should be labeled as a drama. Not really funny at all. A lot of people yelling at each other. Mitz is always angry, drama between Stick and his ex, Zero hates everyone, etc. The show has potential but really needs to lighten up and add some humor. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Alexander H Funny, well written, excellent production value. There’s a very irritating character but even that one kinda grows on you. Lil bit of betrayal, an opinionated Latina character, lots of genuine laughs, a bear at one point. What’s not to like Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
