Critics Consensus

It may offer energetic escapism for less demanding filmgoers, but Battleship is too loud, poorly written, and formulaic to justify its expense -- and a lot less fun than its source material.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Once the special effects take over, Berg has little room to assert his personality (or tell a story, for that matter), and the movie feels like a chore. May 24, 2012 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Shockya.com Riggins and Landry in the Navy, Peter Berg Does Michael Bay, Transformers-esque, Not Really Battleship; any of those titles are just as fitting if not more so than Battleship. Rated: 2.5 May 19, 2012 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic Battleship is substantially less awful than it could have been. And for me, that may have been the biggest disappointment of all. May 18, 2012 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine Everything that you think may happen will happen. But it's the little differences in the process that make the movie enjoyable and its true filmmaking achievement. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 19, 2022 Full Review Graeme Tuckett The Post NZ Some people will tell you that Battleship is a bad film. And they will be right. But it is still a better film than a lot of other action and effects-dominated movies out there. Especially ones based on toy franchises. Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Tom M Those critical of this movie expect too much of this film. One negative review described it as "Transformers at Sea" and I think that perfectly captures the movie's tone. Yes, the plot is quite two dimensional, but the point of it is to enjoy the amazing special effects and action - with a tiny homage to the original boardgame in the bouy scene! Besides, it does a wonderful job incorporating real veterans into the story and cast, showing that when it matters most they are always willing and ready to serve. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Peter F How did I forget Liam Neeson was in this?? This movie embraces cheesiness in every awesome way. The critics need to get over themselves. In fact watching in 2025 it has a better plot than alot of action movies today. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/28/25 Full Review Chris J Watchable but it starts to drag after a while. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Jacob M Anyone taking this film seriously needs to just stop! It's a fast paced, funny, action packed, sci-fi flick based ever so slightly on the board game, thats it! Yes there are huge inaccuracies from errors in job roles, command structure, weapons, hell even the firing up of that old battleship!!! That would take about a week... They did it in 5 minutes, but it's not meant to be correct, it's meant to be fun and for that it wins every time. The acting is actually decent, Rihanna was great, some scenes are a little bit hammy in places, but because it doesn't linger for anymore than a brief second or two, it doesn't matter. Grab the popcorn and enjoy the ride 🤙 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Debra B this movie is fantastic still. Taylor Kitsch, his acting was great so was Rihanna's everybody in this movie did a fantastic job. The special effects were off the hook and whoever started the bad review chain on this must have had an agenda because there was nothing wrong with this movie it was great I watched it over 100 times and I'm watching it right now. If you're a Sci-Fi fan this is a not miss movie but these reviews are just stupid just like the ones for John Carter. It was like somebody had it in for Taylor from the beginning. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review John Z To say that this movie is action-packed is an understatement! Get some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy!
