What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may offer energetic escapism for less demanding filmgoers, but Battleship is too loud, poorly written, and formulaic to justify its expense -- and a lot less fun than its source material.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Once the special effects take over, Berg has little room to assert his personality (or tell a story, for that matter), and the movie feels like a chore. But it's the little differences in the process that make the movie enjoyable and its true filmmaking achievement. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 19, 2022 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz Some people will tell you that Battleship is a bad film. And they will be right. But it is still a better film than a lot of other action and effects-dominated movies out there. Especially ones based on toy franchises. Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

James L Battleship is a enjoyable sci fi movie that has fun written all over it. Great effects, and novel concept. This should not be inspected as fine art. This is fun fantasy entertainment nothing else and for that it hits the spot. The nod to veterans being useful in their final days brought an endearing tone as well as the use of old tech against alien tech. These are good human ideas that brought value to the narrative. Well worth watching but leave your film degree at the door and switch off those brain cells. Just enjoy! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Adrian M If you disengage your brain, it’s entertaining nonsense. Special effects are not bad. Loved the way they targeted the missiles, “G4…you hit my battleship “ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Carson P Despite what some think of certain films having fun is the main purpose for one’s like this battleship is a popcorn action film where you are meant to have fun be entertained and by giving us charachters that while not nuanced or deep are at the very least likeable and entertaining Alex hopper is a fun protagonist who delivers witty dialogue he’s played as if the actor Taylor kitsch wanted to become the new shwarzenneger/stallone ( don’t forget he was also in John Carter the same year this was made which was a a huge flop and posssibly the biggest flop of the 2010s but wasn’t a really bad novie ( just because certain movies flop at box office that doesn’t make them bad some movies just deserve better ) I really enjoyed his performance here and it’s nice to see Liam neeson in a supporting role of a uss admiral he gave the performance he was supposed to of how a navy admiral should act to his crew. Whoever calls this movie stupid or the equivalent of an idiot is an idiot himself ( seriously why does everyone ( the critical naysayer ) say these movies are stupid. I dont understand just because a movie isn’t made as high art or anything resembling deep thinking and isn’t high minded doesn’t make it completely idiotic it’s not insulting to anyone’s intelligence and especially not mine it’s supposed to pump your adrenaline make you exited, while many would say this has a lot in common with those transformers films this one is at least better by having little to no jeuvenile humor, convoluted and confusing subplots/plot twists and having more intellligence and better fleshed out charachters that are more likeable and less obnoxious. I can agree with the transformers movies being called stupid and idiotic but that’s because of the jeuvenile humor, cringe inducing dialogue, and obnoxious charachters. Battleship didn’t really have any of that. I barely remember much dialogue in battleship but with any film like this critics complain or no reason about the dialogue it’s not terrible more like snappy and goofy they are trying to make it entertaining that’s what these types of movies are for. I know I’m saying the dialogue in battleship wasn’t cringe worthy because I don’t remember much of it but I know there are movies with far worse written dialogue than this I’ve seen them ) battleship in terms of its technical aspects and action spectacle it’s a work of art but not one in terms of storytelling or nuanced charachterisations. Not every good movie has to be like that. The set up was inspiring as was the phenomenal action scenes and especially what I really liked the most about battleship probably the main one of the main reasons I have a soft spot for it is the CGI on the battleships and the way it depicts them they look realistic and the way they fire their weapons is tremendous perhaps my favorite part of this amusing movie was the climax when they used the USS Missouri with those long cannons against that alien ship controlling the force field it was just awesome and I also really liked how when those shredding blades nearly came down to the ship they were destroyed by those jet planes which also finished off the alien ship it resembles a lot of that tankbuster scene near the ending of saving private Ryan the visual/special effects were excellent and top notch it should have got an Oscar nom for best special effects. I also enjoyed the charachter interactions notably that of kitsch and asano they acted like friends as a team and they were brilliant togeather they acted like what navy sailors are and that’s following their duties All in all I’m not going to lie battleship is a popcorn film you have to watch it for it’s entertainment value that’s the main purpose of these movies existence I don’t care if the subject manner is silly because they made it as if it’s about a board game with no meaning at all as it was just battleships fighting against one another it may have been fun but it wasn’t anything like reading a book or having charachters or a story there was nothing to it and compared to it the movie is deep and has An actual plot and actual charachters and acting performances which the game didn’t have, and the film isn’t really based off of it it’s just named after it and having the same logo that and it having battleships is the only thing they have in common nothing more. It is a big dumb fun action film that doesn’t require too much thinking and is made to entertain you and make you exited like your on an adventure and unlike films like cowboys and aliens, the transformers sequals, godzilla 1998, geostorm and moonfall this one actually understand popcorn entertainment and doesn’t push it with its silliness like those films did as it has better acting, better writing, better directing, more likeable and interesting charachters, and having some intelligence to it it’s one of the better silly fun popcorn films of this century on enjoyment scale I give it a 9.5 but as a film in terms of good quality and taste it gets at least a 7/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
