Art House as in "seriously weird film". I have to read people's review first to actually get the metaphor. It was that classic artsy thing about giving the interpretation to audience's hand. But seriously, he doesn't even give us the chance to care. Pretentious, contrived at its best.

Pretentious Genet, via Fassbender, influenced turd. Stop the encouragement of violence to women, Miike. In one film it maybe a meditation in more than one it is exploitation. No understanding at all of the queer experience, either.

This was a really wonderfully curious, unusual, intriguing, creative and stunningly playful, yet utterly serious/somber theatrical-styled film. It's times like this when I also wish I spoke the language better because I'm certain the translation doesn't do it justice. It's simple, with relatively little dialogue, but A LOT said, via expressions, cinematography, and staging. It's made it to my top 20 list, which takes some doing - and is a film I wouldn't mind watching again (especially as my Japanese improves) and would recommend to those with the patience to let the story and gist of the piece unravel ever so slowly, appreciating not only the plot and characters, but the unique artistic representation of these, through a juxtaposition of theatrical and cinematic elements, reality and imagination, all beautifully, and almost magically criss-crossing and dancing around socio-psychological themes of hope, love, passion, loss and despair.

oh come on. it is the great director takashi miike & the talented Ryuhei Matsuda but how come the movie is slow-paced, dragging, low-budgeted and boring. If you are gonna watch this movie, just expect a play in jail with the spotlight on the criminals.

The only thing with this film that got me frustrated is that, at the end, lots of parts are left unsolved/unanswered. Otherwise, a really interesting movie, that gets you into the story of these two mens more and more as minutes pass by.

I can't help but feel I'd have liked this movie a lot more if I hadn't just watched it fan-subbed. Mental note: must learn Japanese at some point. This'll be a fairly short review, simply because I can't actually trust what I just read in relation to the story I was being told- well, I say story, but others are more accurate when they've called this an art installation. A film crafted not to tell a story but to communicate emotion. And in that, I'd say Miike has succeeded. There's finer points here, such as the actual meaning behind a lot of what was being shown, such as the temple and the rocket and what they represent. Just read a review down below though, which had a very interesting take on it: the rocket represents a journey outward, the temple representing a journey inward.
I think the murder mystery was somewhat clumsy in that it was entirely predictable, but it gave Miike reason to mess with the narrative so it balances out I suppose. The performances were enjoyable and suitably anime-esque. All in all the film was good, but if I ever get the chance to see an official translation, I'll return to this review and add to it. As it stands, the film should be seen for it's beautiful composition.
