Lili Loofbourow Washington Post A stunning, sprawling, naturalistic, extremely improbable success. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Imogen West-Knights Slate The series is unapologetically weird, full of strange sex and wild obsessions, hot and muggy and foreboding. Dec 24, 2024 Full Review David Opie Empire Magazine Across several generations, a dynamic cast effortlessly navigates the story's unusual tone with a much-needed naturalism. Let's hope Netflix manages to stick the landing when they wrap this epic up in season two. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2024 Full Review Ricardo De Querol El Pais (Spain) There is too much reverence in this adaptation, yes, but it is done with care. While imperfect, it is a different, defensible, and honest way to enjoy this beautiful and tragic story once again. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media This adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's 1967 novel not only painstakingly lives up to the iconic novel's scope but becomes a wholly unique experience itself. Rated: 5/5 Dec 30, 2024 Full Review Sergio Del Molino El Pais (Spain) The story never takes off, it's neither realistic nor magical and recreated in supposed preciousness and eroticisms... Justin C Fantastically surreal and evocative, the cast and crew did an amazing job translating the magic of this novel to the screen. Extra points for the mostly Colombian cast and filming locations. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Benji T It's a fantastic adaptation of the novel. The people who are hating on it are individuals who can't speak Spanish to save their lives and never read the actual novel, which means they're ignorance of "magical realism" and other pertinent concepts, which you'd only understand if you actually read the novel. One of the best foreign language dramas of 2024! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review MVH1981 V Where's the magic? Some weirdness here and there, but nowhere near the fantastic dreamlike tone of the book Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Andrei D A well acted spectacle that captures much of what makes the book unique but struggles to bring interiority to its characters Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Actually I It’s terrible. I had to fast forward through all the filler(sex) scenes. When a show relies that heavily on showing skin, you wonder if it has anything else to offer. I stuck with it through a couple of episodes, waiting for the “supernatural” events to kick in, to hopefully give some excitement to this droll drama. But all we got was a floating basket. I gave up a few minutes into episode three. This Is one of the stupidest stories I’ve ever seen anyone try to put on screen. Don’t waste your time on this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Chris D Wonderful portrayal of the human experience. Full of joy and pathos, and the inter-penetration of the ordinary and the fantastic. Maybe one of the best television interpretations of a thought to be unfilmable novel. Here’s hoping the 2nd half is able to deliver. Can’t recommend it enough.
