nilufer e I'm not a fan of Turkish movies I'd have to say despite the fact that I am Turkish, mostly they are full of clichés and not original. This one however was an adaptation from a novel I quite loved, so it was enjoyable at least. I only didn't like the female lead, the book was better also. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Ender and Cetin live together in Ankara. Gradually approaching middle age, the two men harbor a deep, close friendship which makes their coexistence peaceful and happy. This all changes when they decide to help out Nihal, a friendâ(TM)s twenty something sister by letting her stay with them. Somewhat introverted and quiet, Nihal challenges Ender and Cetinâ(TM)s jocular rapport but fits in soon enough. Things get complicated as both of the men start to fall in love with Nihal. âOur Grand Despairâ? is a smarter and wiser film than the premise might suggest. It paints a compelling picture of modern Ankara with its student life and political climate while probing its characters deeply, with a good sense on nuance. I really liked the ambiguity of the relationship between Ender and Cetin. They share a life and have a long history, together they come across as an old loving couple. The dynamic lies somewhere between friendship and asexual romance. An ultimate bromance if you will. They view them loving the same woman not as a problem but a perfect continuation of their own relationship. This is a bittersweet but comfortable film, but at times it feels a bit slow, lightweight and oddly paced. Somehow the form and pacing of the whole donâ(TM)t quite work, even if all the ingredients for a top notch comic drama are there and can be appreciated on their own.
