Christian Toto HollywoodInToto.com Very little happens for the first 40 minutes of Blue Jay ... and that's a beautiful thing as captured in this indie thriller. Rated: 3/4 Mar 20, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Other than the paper thin villains, ridiculous locations, and flat dialog, I'm sure there's something good about this movie. The Director and co-writer of the movie supposedly got the idea when he met some PCT hikers on Mt Whitney. Evidently, instead of impressing him with their physical stamina, they frightened him and a bad movie was born. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie had potential but crashed big time. There was good cinematography, and Sara Lindsey is beautiful, but that was about it. For nearly the first half of the movie nothing really happens except we get a couple who are not quite boyfriend-girlfriend hiking Mt. Whitney. The man, Jack, is an intense, supposedly experienced hiker. Ashley is a bit timid about doing this hike during the of season. There is nothing very remarkable about Jack, so early on I figured he was a throw away character. Ashley on the other hand is clearly what we are supposed to notice. She is beautiful. She has a great athletic body and piercing eyes. It looks like at one time she had beautiful, elegant dark hair, but like so many women ruined it by bleaching it blonde. As a result, she has that funky dark eyebrows with bleach blonde hair thing going on. So, they are hiking. There are various flashbacks to them talking about the trip and Ashley looking shocked. So, we get the impression she was very hesitant to come. But their backpacks shouldn't weigh them down much, the way they throw them around in this movie they appear to be stuffed with crumpled newspaper. Major fail. Anyway, they make it to summit and encounter some creepy guys on the way who are nowhere even close to be dressed for the cold and altitude they were at and had virtually no supplies. So, Jack, who supposedly is experienced, doesn't recognize that this is not a good situation. Another major fail. So, not surprisingly, Jack, our throwaway character disappears, and Ashley takes center stage. So, Ashley is trying to avoid these guys and get to safety. At one point she walks up to the river. Without any clue as to why, so undresses and gets in the freezing water and swims around and finds Jacks body and recovers his ice axe. It made no sense at all. How did she know he was there? Well, it doesn't matter, because here is where it goes from stupid to ludicrous. So here we are above 10,000 feet, with freezing weather. Ashley just swam in a freezing river. So now she gets out. Instead of getting dressed, she starts running down the trail in bikini briefs and a tank top. Yes, she is hot to look at and seeing her run in her beautiful bare feet on a frozen rocky trail is impressive, but it is stupid. Of course, she gets captured. The "bad guys" put her clothes and boots back on and tie her up. She gets away though…. the plot needs her to. So, she starts taking these guys out. She bashes one guy's head in with a rock and cuts a rope that another one is climbing. One of the bad guys kills his friend by slitting his throat, so…. whatever. We get down to one bad guy left and Ashley impales him with an ice axe. She makes it down to the parking lot and impaled bad guy catches up to her, so she beats him some more and then runs all the way back to town and collapses in the street The movie was already off the rails, but here it plunges into a ravine of nonsense. I don't know if it is supposed to be a dream sequence or not, but she ends up back at the diner she and Jack were at in the beginning of the film and all the bad guys are there bandaged up. They ask her what her trail name is going to be and she says "Blue Jay" and the movie ends. What the f***! This made no sense. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A bad movie that's good in two ways: Blue Jay offers beautiful shots of Mount Whitney and a surprisingly realistic relationship dynamic between the two leads. But the Deliverance-esque plot offers zero surprises except for a pseudo-psychological climax. I suppose one could do worse. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
