Audience Member Terrorists hijack a Japanese destroyer which has the latest super radar called Aegis on board. Unless their demands are met, they will unleash a deadly chemical which will wipe out Tokyo. Trying to stop them is the Chief Petty Officer and an undercover agent. Meanwhile the government plan to launch their own strike using a fighter jet armed with a Thermite missile to destroy the ship. Quite a good action/thriller. Think of it as the movie Under Siege on a navy ship and you'll get an idea what this is all about with 2 people battling to regain control of the ship against all odds. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member good action, average storyline. but mixed well and served well. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I bought this DVD around April or May I think, but didn't get to watch it until after July. I like this. More at: http://www.shuqi.org/asiancinema/reviews/aegis.shtml Overall, I like the review at: http://www.shuqi.org/asiancinema/reviews/aegis.shtml However, it WAS shot on a real ship. Either that, or the scenes in the "ship" took place in a real training mockup. But, generally, for surface ships, such mockups would be expensive and not really worthwhile, not unless a navy were producing films. But, the ship/s in which the scenes were shot in Aegis must have been on a ship moored (not "docked"; docked is a different term....) pierside. The compartments (working spaces/areas) are real, the passageways (corridors, or, for you landlubbers, "hallways"), and piping and valves, too, are real. So is the equipment in the "computer room". However, I can almost certainly say, these shots did NOT take place aboard a Konguo (DD-173) JMSDF ship. The ship is TOO new, and there are only four (4) in that class. The Atago (DD-177) class has 4 as well, but that ship has a hangar bay aft (on the back end). In this film, I (using my Sailor's eye) can be sure this was not aboard the Konguo for other reasons: Sensitive equipment wont be allowed in public action movies. Also, there is a concern for ship and crew safety if the ship's innards are displayed in a violent set of action and someone can pause and learn their way about the ship. Touring is one thing. Filming outside of naval media events is another. (EDIT: STRIKE THAT I just rewatched it, and topside (outside) shots are definitely aboard the Isokaze or her sister ships.) But, the engine room looks pretty legit, as compared to photos or diagrams I've seen in the public realm. Anyway, the ships are definitely PRE-Aegis. Still, most of the CIC equipment are good stand-ins. One major clue is whether or not the CIC has 2 or 4 large flat Plasma/LCD tactical displays. Most viewers won't know or care unless they have a Sailor's eye. (STRIKE THAT: Upon rewatching, I this time saw the 4 Aegis display screens. Don't know why I wrote that it was not an Aegis ship. OTOH, it is possible that an earlier class might have these as an interim upgrade. Not sure of that, tho. Amazing that Japan allowed this ship so much action footage. The US hardly does, citing security concerns. Unless it's a candy-ass recruiting poster like Top Gun was.) The action is good. The lead characters are spot-on. For me, there were some tear-jerking moments. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Atypical third rate action movie. I have not had the privilege of reading the original novel so I cannot draw comparisons. Watching the film on it's merit however, I can come to a similar conclusion that preceeding reviewers seem to stumble at. The film is tied together kind of raggidly. Character development is at a pitiful low which means a deinied insight and history of each character. The film seems to plod along trying to make up plots to try and appear that there is alot to understand. Actually, there is very little to pick up on. It's a rather straight-laced but "slow" paced film in terms of action-genre. Feel free to watch it, but don't take a night off specially.
