Critics Consensus

Like its lead character, Breakthrough is fiercely focused on faith -- but its less subtle elements are balanced by strong performances and an uplifting story.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is a lot better crafted, acted, and has a better cast than a lot of these kinds of films ordinarily do. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review There is literally one moment in which it raises an interesting theological problem, then goes right back to what it was doing before...a movie designed to preach to the choir. May 22, 2019 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian Here is another illustration of how the faith-based drama has pushed into cinemas material indistinguishable from vast swathes of the afternoon TV schedule. Rated: 2/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) An experience that feels more at home on an evening slot on Channel 5 rather than at the cinema. At best it’s bland and predictable, and at worst it’s irritatingly preachy. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The script is sexist and bordering on misogynistic. Sadly, this film brought out my inner feminist. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Breakthrough is also that rare faith-based film that gives some respect to the medical community. Daniel G A Christian movie about a miracle recovery of a young man - it was very "correct" and I felt emotional at the teen's recovery, plus we watched it late and we didn't fall asleep, So that's saying something. That said, I continue agnostic and if anything it is people's faith and not a god that can cure. Afterwards I noticed it was directed by the actress who played B'Elanna on Star Trek: Voyage, Roxann Dawson, in her directorial debut - kudos to her for a technically very well-made movie. Also, I didn't recall that the pretty and inspirational song performed by one of the young actresses in a scene outside the hospital, "I'm Standing With You", was nominated for an Academy Award. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Christine K If you are a holy roller it's great, otherwise too good to be true. All that time without having a pulse and he has no brain damage well only in the movies as they say.. It was good it was on TV because it wouldn't have been worth a trip to the movies.. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Audience Member based on the incredible true story from 2015 about the Smith family Joyce and John Smith are mother and son and it was documented as the most incredible miracle in recent history John was 14, Guatemalan, and was adopted by Joyce Smith and her husband, he was an aspiring athlete but he had no interest in doing homework or working with others considering he was abandoned at a young age then one winter in January he and his friends fell into the frozen lake of Missouri suffering hypothermia the two other boys managed to make it out but John himself was in an induced coma in order to prevent oxygen from leaving his brain and his internal organs but his mother played by the talented Chrissy Metz refuses to leave his side, with a simple touch and an amazing amount of faith he was brought back to life it's a miracle in itself since he was dead for 45 min then made a startling recovery it's not another run-of-the-mill faith-based film and you don't have to be religious to appreciate the strong bond between a mother and her child the film is a bit long and I can understand a lot of skeptics having a problem with this one person making it and not everyone else still, the story is emotionally affective hitting all the right notes with an incredible performance by Chrissy Metz nothing is forced or shoved down your throat so who knows for sure if a divine power exists out there we don't have all the answers but it's great for all of us to see that miracles happen when we least expect them Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Tammy T Such a heart-wrenching amazing story. Fantastic acting, great music and moving story-line. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Barkada F The film's message about the power of faith and the strength of community is delivered in a way that feels genuine and unforced. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/23 Full Review Brian F This true story really runs you through a maze of emotions that change constantly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
