Phuong Le Guardian Despite Phillips' cleaver-wielding swagger... Butchers is pretty much dead meat, an amalgam of worn-out tropes unsuccessfully zombified to life. Rated: 2/5 Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Butchers doesn't do anything else aside from causing a queasy stomach, and for many will just be another slow and anti-climactic gory flick with boring protagonists and one dimensional villains. Rated: 2/5 Aug 6, 2023 Full Review Martin Unsworth Starburst While it won't win any awards for originality, it's a fun watch for those with a stomach and in the mood for another 'hillbillies with a cannibal brother' flick. Rated: 3/5 Mar 9, 2021 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut One to watch if you really, really wish there were more hillbilly horror films, or if you have a bingo card of horror tropes handy. Otherwise, not. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2021 Full Review Tom Beasley Flickering Myth A gory trudge through horror tropes, entirely lacking in any sense of gleeful malevolence or gritty thrills. Damningly, it just sort of exists. Rated: 2/5 Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Lucy Buglass Love Horror Butchers is watchable, but it really doesn't bring anything new to the genre so some fans may be disappointed if the synopsis drew them in. Rob H Some poor acting a lack of delivery on what is quite a good storyline. Not a bad overall watch Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Trina H What can I say about this ridiculously bad movie. It was awfully bad. I had no one to root for. They captive characters had absolutely no common sense. The two females escaped several times, but either stupidly got in the car in the middle of nowhere and let him drive her to his back his rundown shack where she is captured. Then the two females escaped again and decides to go back back to their broken down car to wait for a tow truck that was called by the crazy man who beat, tortured and kidnapped them. The male & the remaining living female again escaped, but instead of getting away in the truck and going to the police, they decide to get a shot gun and go after their crazy ass kidnappers. This movie is a crazy, idiot very poorly written script. I don't fault the actors. They did a relatively good job. They can only act out what the script says. It is just very poorly written!!!! What an absolute waste of my time! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/16/23 Full Review Alex B This movie is worth the watch. It will make you feel uneasy but it's good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Movie was just gory trash with a super unsatisfying ending. The bad guys win, the end. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review mileena u The movie has decent production but sort of runs into the problems with most indie movies -- the characters are required to be incredibly stupid to advance the plot. It'd be more fun to watch with a group of friends than alone. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring, slow, sluggish, and stale. Protagonists and villains all unlikable, which would be fine if they were more interesting but everyone is either bored, crappy, cowardly, or all of the above--or they are an evil monologue-ing hillbilly. Seriously, bla bla bla. It stops being menacing and creepy and becomes lame so quick with this guy. The actors and production value are all fine and doing the best with what they can, but if everyone is going to be so bland and difficult to root for then at least make it fun, have more splatter, have more tension, have more suspense, have more SOMETHING of entertainment value. Why do people say this movie is "fun". I'm all about gore and horror and splatter and B movies. I'm also all about suspense and atmosphere and dread and implied danger or mystery or threat. I'm even all about jump scares and simplistic haunted house antics. Heck, man. I even love melodrama and the like when it's done right or has the right payoff... this movie has NONE of these things. It's just an unpleasant trip down unpleasant lane with a cast of characters written to be as tedious as possible with a sense of menace that is more obnoxious and repetitive than truly disturbing, horrifying, or scary. Boo! Big waste of what seems to be perfectly decent film crew, cameras, actors, etc. Regardless of what direction you go in, get better scripts, folks before you commit so much time and resources to this 3 week-old tub of room temperature mac-n-cheese served up like it wants to be psychological drama or survival thriller or the next Texas Chainsaw. It's none of those. It's not even especially self-aware as people say it was, and this whole notion of being self-aware as a free pass to be as boring or derivative as possible is way overblown and a smug, smarmy trope among filmmakers. "Oh, we know that it's a crappy ripoff of other stuff but not as fun, scary, or interesting, and since we kind of wink at the fact that we know this, it should encourage you to be more forgiving of all these things." ...Nope. Hanging a lantern on something doesn't automatically mean that what you're hanging the lantern on isn't trash. Letting us know that you know it's trash doesn't make it more artistic. The problem is not even being more self-indulgent. It's not shocking enough to be self-indulgent in any kind meaningful or interesting way. It's just lazy script writing. If lazy plotting equals self-indulgent then alright, fine I guess. Oh man, during one of his evil hillbilly monologues, the villain says, "We don't actually... eat people around here... that would be a little cliche." Oh, nice, man. Here's a slow sarcastic clap for you. What great dramatic irony you have in recognizing how tropey this all is. It does a pretty job at reminding you of better movies--that's a plus. Also, the film scoring is competent. Across the board, what a waste of talent. Every now and then you even get glimmers of an idea that the script writers could do better, but they just didn't even try here. The final nail in the coffin is that it isn't "so bad, it's good." It's just a swing and a miss and an annoyingly tedious one at that because you can tell that it wants us to respect it for what it is. We should not.
