Critics Consensus

Cargo takes a refreshingly character-driven approach to the zombie genre that's further distinguished by its Australian setting and Martin Freeman's terrific lead performance.

Susie Porter, Anthony Hayes and David Gulpilil are among the excellent supporting cast in an uncommonly thoughtful spin on the genre. Go to Full Review

Cargo's big drawcard is its sheer humanity. There's a lot of tragedy on show here, and you'll have to be made of stern stuff indeed to make it through this outback odyssey without a few tears. Go to Full Review

How would you care for your child, especially if your own life was threatened? An interesting question to be sure, but the film struggles to overcome genre cliches and pacing issues to explore the answer. Go to Full Review

ACE F Dec 30 WORTHLESS from start to finish. All characters are unlikeable, save for 1 nurse who's only on screen for 2 minutes, tops. Bad scriptwriting, blocking, casting, & even bad sound editing throughout. Preserve your lifetime for better things than this piece-o-crap. Setup is so ill-defined, audience can't really know what the situation even *is*, so the ultimate stakes are not clear for the first half of the movie. Characters make such very bad choices, it isn't credible these people could have survived this long into a such a zombie disaster. The audience WANTS the protags dead quickly so we can switch to the real protags so the real movie can start. It never happens. Sailboat is grounded but also flooded for no reason Zombie in boat's closet fails to attack dad But attacks mom a day later instead?! Dad fails to inform her of that zombie?! Zombies stick their heads in the sand for no reason other than to solve the writer's problems He's undead, but then he's not! See more Thomas O Oct 23 Unique try but not quite there. Let's be honest there's no one on earth that hasn't seen a zombie movie. So why do you portray ppl as idiots. Ok o get it this is not the blueprint for zombie apocalypse survival walking dead. But dammit give the guy some common sense. The stupidity and ability to predict everything ruins it for me. See more James D Sep 30 I enjoyed this look at a zombie style film a normal man desperately seeking help in an empty landscape not all men are born heroes like a marvel film nor was the lead character he was in the unknown and did what he thought was best it a fresh look at that and what a brilliant ending he knows its his end he does everything he can to save his daughter like any father would brilliant film See more Manuel G Jul 13 Waste of time. Main character caused his own family's downfall. This script was written with crayons. See more Paschalis D Jul 9 It introduces some fresh ideas to the zombie genre, but zombies aren’t really the main focus here. I went in expecting more action and was ready to rate it a 3 because of the lack of it, but the ending hit me like a punch to the gut. It almost made me cry. It’s a deeply sad film that really puts you in the protagonist’s shoes and makes you feel every bit of what he’s going through.
