Audience Member A great Soviet film to showcase the civil war that brought them to power. It had thrilling action for its time and showcased some of the best aspects of the civl war in the favor of the red army. It was a great story that showcased an amazing hero in Chapaev. It is a very effective piece of propaganda for the soviets. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie is a classic example of socialist realism in how it depicts the roles of the Bolshevik party in society and how the Bolsheviks want the people to follow.Great movie! Released in the Soviet Union on January 14, 1935, Chapayev (Chapaev) was directed by brothers Georgi and Sergei Vasilyev, based on the book about the Commander of the 25th Division of the Red Army, and obviously commissioned by the state. Just as I was looking for good movies about either Russians or communists I thought it would be great to check out a title about a military leader. In the finest of his acting performance Boris Babochkin plays the lead role, Vasili Ivanovich Chapaev, who was fighting on the side of the poor people. His character deftly blends old-guard heroism with communist-dictated pragmatism, and even though he was uneducated Chapayev had deferred to the new-regime wisdom of his local commissar by using potatoes as a strategic technique. Featuring action sequences that were perfectly edited in order, the man's victories made this movie as a powerful propagandist piece for the military and history experts during lectures. Aside from its socialist theme and political struggle, I also liked the movie for featuring Anka - played by Varvara Myasnikova - fighting alongside with the men at war. :) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I found it slightly dull after a while.
