Jeff M This is an old-fashioned, tug-at-the-heartstrings holiday drama that, quite frankly, left me in tears. One could debate that it is shameless in its sentimentality, and I would not be able to put up much of an argument against that accusation. But what it also has is a magnificent and heartfelt performance by Loretta Young that pretty much obliterates any negativity. I can't say enough about her - she is warm, authentic, touching and towers over the proceedings like a great movie star. It is a beautiful performance and rightfully won a Golden Globe. The supporting cast is strong if not necessarily up to Young's caliber. The movie is flawed - a courtroom scene in which Young's mental stability is questioned goes on way too long, a romance between the private investigator and Young's granddaughter feels unnecessary, and Young's illness is used as a plot device but is never spoken of again. Some of the supporting characters feel very stereotypical, and her son's change of heart not entirely credible. But I was willing to forgive just about anything just to be in Young's presence - she is the heart and soul of the movie, and she resists the temptation of making Amanda too saintly. And that ending - I knew it was coming, I felt it in my bones, I told myself I wasn't going to fall for it, and moments later I was looking for some Kleenex. If you're looking for something to watch with grandma and grandpa during the holidays, this is ideal! And you're bound to fall in love with Loretta Young just as I did.
