Ronnie Scheib Variety Dan Eberle pushes film noir to its subjective extreme with this well-acted, unpretentious story of a fatalistic ex-cop. Audience Member Seriously well-made, micro-budget independent crime thriller about an ex cop up to his ears in corruption when a politician hires him to track down his daughter's stalker. A few minor flaws, -the film needs just a tad bit of polish here and there, but doesn't come across as low budget, even though you can just tell it's probably the director's first feature-length effort. Cut To Black is well shot, almost arty, and the acting is competent.. Most importantly, the story is intriguing, fresh, and credible, It's well-developed, with a couple of twists. There are some memorable scenes, and an effective and intriguing, original musical score. I'm quite pleased to have found Cut To Black. It kept me engrossed, made me think a little, and will stay in my memory. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review sarfaraz a Cut to Black - independent black-and-white neo-noir (tribute to 40s black and white investigative film-style) written, directed and starred by Dan Eberle, others in the cast include Jillaine Gill, Beau Allulli, Joe Stipak, James Alba. It won 'Audience Award' at Brooklyn Film Festival. James Parsons managed the photography work on the film-whereas Bob Hart prioritizes the film with mesmerizing Jazz-score. Bill Ivers (Dan Eberle) belonged to Brooklyn police force, dishonored cop who's now working as private-detective. He is usually thrust-upon by landlord's cheating-wife, who trusts him and once helped him. Bill is hired by police chief to follow his daughter 'Jessica' (Jillaine Gill) who's been stalked-she works at strip-club and lives with her sincere but troublesome boyfriend. Bill seems to find redemption in helping out extraordinarily, which includes paying off huge amount of money to free Jessica's boyfriend's loans to bad guys. Can anybody be expected to sit around a film that has the following traits; black-and-white, OR 'indie'? Of course 'yes' - he who loves the versatility of 40s investigate style plot; plus touch of crime, sex and money. Dan Eberle is genius guy-he has made sure that film is thoroughly entertained by the audience and leaving no space for any flaw in it. All actors have fulfilled sincerity with the director-cum-actor by self-actualization of their efforts. A significant addition to list of fabulous 'neo-noir' films. A film for those who appreciate the ambiguity of suspense like that of 'Chinatown'. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
