I hated this movie ! Apparently the moderators refuse to allow anything less than a half star rating which is all it deserves! Once again I need to emphasize that I watched this movie on a dare . This entire movie setting takes place in the most drab, washed out , depressing setting ever imagined.
Any reflections of regrets are short-lived being met by repetitive patterns of the same habits and mistakes. We see the characters complaints about desires for change without the much needed efforts to merit any improvements . With Damnation being the final destination for everyone involved including the viewers who get suckered into watching this Epic Tarr failure.

A part of me is reluctant to provide a perfect rating to this uncompromisingly bleak work because Tarr's achievement so defies comprehension that I have a hard time accepting it. In truth, the film mesmerizes the viewer to such an immersive extent with its shimmering coalescence of literal and existential mire that one simply can't deny the hypnotic effect. Regardless of the absence of any kind of redeeming message, I honestly can not think of a single thing that I would want to change about this enigmatic work; nor can I attest to why exactly it works to such great effect. No plot description is necessary either, in that the film's appeal is inseparable from its beautifully melancholic aesthetic. Simply surrender your senses to this film and you'll experience the heightened visceral qualities generally achieved by the most immaculately constructed tone poems. Then be prepared to second guess your taste.

The dialogue, or rather the monologues, were often preposterously philosophical, and the direction leaned too heavily on the slow tracking shot. The music played on the soundtrack near the end was clearly different than the music the band depicted was playing. That was a little jarring. Otherwise, this was a sad, beautiful film. I would never want to live in the world it depicts. It's always raining, muddy, the shabby bars filled with catatonics, drinking only to keep from shooting themselves I suppose. But the photography is outstanding, the faces all fascinating to look at, and the story is simple but effective.

Often cited as Bela Tarr's first great movie and justifiably so, Damnation consistently features the director's signature techniques to make for another bleak meditation on life and the misery that can come with just existing.

"This way it's a nice family story. But it finishes like any other story, because stories end badly. Stories are all stories of disintegration. The heroes always disintegrate, and they disintegrate the same way."

Much-admired filmmaker Bela Tarr will not be everyone's cup of tea, and many will find this film slow-moving but beautiful to look at.
