Critics Consensus

Dances with Wolves suffers from a simplistic view of the culture it attempts to honor, but the end result remains a stirring western whose noble intentions are often matched by its epic grandeur.

Pauline Kael New Yorker This epic was made by a bland megalomaniac (The Indians should have named him "Plays with Camera"). You look at that untroubled face and know he can make everything lightweight. Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Even with its flaws, Dances With Wolves is cause for celebration, a haunting elegy to the end of the Great Plains wilderness. Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Bob Fenster Arizona Republic It's difficult for any actor to direct himself effectively. It's amazing when someone does it in an epic that turns out as fine as this tale of the Old West. Rated: 5/5 Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Forever known (and, in some circles, vilified) as The Movie That Beat GoodFellas For The Best Picture Oscar, Costner’s commercial and critical smash has seen its reputation diminish over the years -- an unfortunate development for a truly exemplary film. Rated: 4/4 Oct 10, 2024 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily An exquisitely shot Western epic with majestic landscapes detailing the crimes against indigenous people and the final years of the American West. Jun 14, 2023 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal Dances With Wolves is Costner's crossroads. Amazingly, he emerges from it a better actor and an extremely good director. thiago s filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é meio fraco, as cenas de ação são fracas parece que não faz o filme ficar bom, e a duração do filme é muito longa 3 horas, não sei como o filme ganhou o oscar de melhor filme do ano, praticamente só as atuações salvaram um pouco o filme. esse filme eu não recomendo assistir. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Leo O A sweeping epic for the ages. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Savannah G Gorgeous! The Scenes, cinematography, and framing of this Film were pretty to watch. There were moments of an old-timey western that made me feel this movie was made earlier than the 90's I felt that the story was interesting and made you think about what a lot of the issues that came up during that time were and how things were glossed over simply for survival. The plot seemed fast, but really, it was a gorgeous film that kept me entertained, with moments of humor and moments of contemplation—I enjoyed the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Terry M Dances with Wolves is one of the greatest movies ever filmed! It's completely satisfying throughout and really elicits your emotions without toying with them. I don't know anybody who's seen it that didn't enjoy it thoroughly. It's one of the greatest Academy Award-winning Best Pictures ever. I actually do question their choices sometimes. But this one takes the cake. Kevin Costner really shows his skill with the project. I've never been a fan of his and I consider him overrated and I've never understood his popularity in any way. But it's like he was born to play this part and direct this movie because he's totally likeable and appealing in this one role of his career. Mary McDonald is perfectly cast and the Indian actors couldn't have been any better. It is a period piece and has stood the test of time and always will because of its themes,it's beautiful cinematography, the flawless performances and the wonderful universal storytelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review David F Appalling drivel. A man wandering about with a gun overlooking a hill and poncing about with Indians for three hours. Kevin Costner is the Happy Shopper Harrison Ford, without the charisma of the Star Wars actor. Why he thought he should direct a film is beyond me. Maybe, just maybe, if they edited out two hours it might become palatable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
