      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Dances with Wolves suffers from a simplistic view of the culture it attempts to honor, but the end result remains a stirring western whose noble intentions are often matched by its epic grandeur.

Mary Jane B A beautiful love story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Zinjx W With Dances with Wolves, Kevin Costner has delivered one of the best films I have ever seen. The portrait of the noble Indians is truly accomplished. Extended Version is a must seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review M G Excellent movie. Everything about it is excellent. Stunning cinematography, gorgeous soundtrack and superb acting. One of my all-time favorite movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Barbara K I wish they went a little more method. Kevin Costner and Mary McDonnell hair and make up look almost too good. You can almost see the hairspray holding their hair in place and perfect faces in that time period looks ridiculous and it is almost all I can see. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review matthias s "Dances with Wolves" dances a fine line between epic and tedious. Clocking in at over three hours in its extended cut, this film certainly overstays its welcome, leaving you wondering if it could've shed an hour without losing its essence. The pacing is as uneven as the vast prairies it portrays. While the exchange of cultures and knowledge between the Native Americans and Lieutenant John Dunbar is intriguing, it takes its sweet time getting there. Kevin Costner's acting is serviceable, but his directing skills shine in capturing the breathtaking cinematography of the American frontier. The landscapes are nothing short of spectacular. However, for all its visual splendor, the story's substance is as thin as the buffalo hides featured in the film. In the end, "Dances with Wolves" is a cinematic journey that, despite its flaws, has moments of brilliance, making it worth a watch for those who appreciate the art of filmmaking and picturesque vistas. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Joel H It'd been a long time since I'd seen Dances with Wolves. I remembered the basic story, but I had forgotten what an impressive film this is. No, Kevin Costner isn't the greatest actor and yes, the plot drags on a little long and yes, the message can get a little heavy-handed at times, but this is an inspiring and touching tale. There are some breathtaking cinematic moments, and the special effects are so well done that you don't really notice them, even decades after it was made. There were a lot of good films released in 1990, but Dances with Wolves definitely deserves to stand out from among the herd. Pauline Kael New Yorker This epic was made by a bland megalomaniac (The Indians should have named him "Plays with Camera"). You look at that untroubled face and know he can make everything lightweight. Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Even with its flaws, Dances With Wolves is cause for celebration, a haunting elegy to the end of the Great Plains wilderness. Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Bob Fenster Arizona Republic It's difficult for any actor to direct himself effectively. It's amazing when someone does it in an epic that turns out as fine as this tale of the Old West. Rated: 5/5 Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily An exquisitely shot Western epic with majestic landscapes detailing the crimes against indigenous people and the final years of the American West. Jun 14, 2023 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal Dances With Wolves is Costner's crossroads. Amazingly, he emerges from it a better actor and an extremely good director. Rated: 4/4 Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Stephen Hunter Baltimore Sun How much easier if the movie were crummy and could be dismissed. But, damn its smarmy soul, it's beautifully watchable, a return to the visual vernacular of the western epic and all its old-fashioned scenic values.
