Audience Member Given my interests in tea ceremony I loved this film, a bit bias of course! However, the film really was what it said on the tin - it didn't really even transpire into a biography and was almost exclusively about Rikyu's death, at times verging on a political drama. Personally I would have preferred it at least to be a biography of more of his life or better still go more in depth into his tea practice and philosophy. That being said it did have some of Rikyu's pearls of wisdom which I found both inspiring and imitable and some nice tea scenes. It was very good at what it was and it was nice to have the other two tea masters in their too. After seeing Toshiro Mifune in Rashomon it was interesting to see him again here in a completely different role and I thought he was very good again. I also really liked Honkakubo and thought it was really good how he was so devout to his master and so humble and modest. As a film I really like Tea Master, I thought some of the sets and cinematography was absolutely stunning, some of the best I've seen, so beautiful, but not at all grand or overly dramatic - some of those trees, that's what makes life life. I liked the mystical element too - the dark road that is for one alone, each must make his own road in the end, not follow another's. I really like the feel of the film - very quiet and personal and intimate, really got to know and feel the characters. There is usually some reason I knock half a point of a film but this time I will add half a point to what it would get otherwise just because it is about the unsung hero of Asia and one of my best friends - tea.
