Death Whisperer is an exhilarating horror-thriller that explores a bloody descent against the strength of familial bonds. The best part? A believable cast of characters who are actually smart, listen to each other, and work together to find a cure.
Although this is my first review on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm no stranger to both Western and Eastern horror cinema. It's upsetting to see such low and thoughtless reviews for this film, as I can confidently say there are plenty of surprises just itching to be unpacked here for both audiences throughout Death Whisperer's 2 hour runtime. In this spoiler free review, let's dive into the film's pacing, visuals, and overall tone to answer the age-old question of "Should I watch this movie?"
With most horror movies, there are a couple recurring tropes that you always expect to see. "Dumb plot" is THE most common offender, where a character does dumb things for the plot to advance. Following spooky sounds, chasing shadows into obvious traps, and staring down the killer as you get murdered are all along those lines. I'm really proud to say that Death Whisperer does none of that, or at least for the few times they do, it's justified and you'll never find yourself asking Why. Each story beat serves as tension, slowly encroaching to big reveal for the twists and turns riddled throughout the plot. The moments of quiet explore the complexity of family, and seeing how they interact with each other reminded much of how my own family would bicker amongst ourselves but still unite together when it mattered most. As the action ramped up, I occasionally found myself thinking, "Wow, they should do this" or "Please listen to them, they know what they're talking about." To my pleasant surprise, yes! The family actually valued the opinions of their loved ones. For the runtime of the film you see time and time again the siblings working together to fight the curse. It's then that you realize the family as a whole acts as the one main character here and it's refreshing to see how the actions of one sibling help flesh out the narrative of another. Once the tension crescendos, that's when Death Whisperer decides to not pull any punches.
The main meat of "scary" falls into two categories: shock and fear. Western horror fans will find a great deal of shock with the copious amounts of blood and visceral gore littered about in these climaxes. It honestly surprised me with how extreme some of these scenes were given that it was eastern cinema. The bigger surprise however, was seeing that most of it were practical effects, a rarity in this day in age that still holds its own against the overuse of CGI in modern horror films. Fear is more common in Eastern horror fans, and if the base plot of the story isn't enough you'll find copious amounts of the common spooky chants and specters that run rampant in the film. These supernatural forces are built up really well and watching our protagonists struggle find ways to struggle against them are definitely welcomed against the standard.
The backdrop of Thailand's rural farmlands helps set the overall tone of isolation and helplessness. There's no easy entertainment or television out there, and the only means of receiving information is by radio or word of mouth. Aside from the farmhands, you don't really see much interaction between the family and anyone else. This helps to strengthen the family themes, and brings greater impact in the larger decisions that each member makes. The older you are in the family tree, the more responsibilities you have, and seeing this amplified through the lens of a farmer's family set up a lot of interesting dynamics that the film played out very well.
Death Whisperer may not be a ground breaking or revolutionary film, but it serves as a new experience and one that a lot of other horror movies could learn from. The tension seamlessly ebbs and flows and seeing a family that actually cooperates with each other against your typical horror plot points is reason enough to give it a watch. The practical effects helps to realize the nightmare and the supernatural hauntings of the curse start to make you question what's real and what isn't. The film is predictable at times, but it never fails to keep you on the edge of your seat.
