Fernando F. Croce Slant Magazine Stagefright proceeds as a rather earthbound taster of winky genre self-reflexivity. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 30, 2007 Full Review Pat Padua Spectrum Culture Grand Guignol spectacle...filtered through the kind of ‘80s excess as could only be imagined by a disciple of Dario Argento. Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast A remarkable directorial debut for Soavi, who displays a keen visual eye amidst all the slashing. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Michele Soavi's feature debut is a solid slasher and an iconic villain costume. While the Final Girl is unfortunately a bit bland, the kills, the direction and the subtle interrogation of class help Stagefright stand apart from its late 80s contemporaries Rated: 4/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...light on violence, clever in conceit and startling in execution, it's every bit as much of a hoot as the poster suggests... Rated: 4/5 Dec 26, 2021 Full Review Martin Unsworth Starburst Michele Soavi's eighties shocker is as visually stylish as you'd expect and more entertaining than you remember. Gary B Absolutely loved this film when I took a chance on it a number of years ago. The scene near the end with the key on the stage was so good. The killer had a good mystique and the owl head was just iconic. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Justin T Moron school of directing lesson one: watch this film. I have just seen too many horrors with silent killers. The only acceptable ones are Halloween (1978) and Friday the 13th (1980). This is nothing compared to either. There are one or two good bits of violence but nothing compared to an average zombie or slasher film. The last twenty minutes picks up a bit but this suffers from the ending that never ends syndrome. By that I mean more and more false endings tacked on when they really should have finished this with a bang. Even at the actual end you are left with no closure which makes this movie so much worse. Some movies can get away with it when done well, leaving some doubt but StageFright just ends with frustration and lack of closure. Definitely not worth watching at all. Save your time for a better film, or the pub. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Alec B Often hilarious but that's part of the fun. Also it's suspenseful when it counts and gorgeously filmed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Stephen C Good fun from one of Dario Argentos proteges This slasher/Giallo deals with a mad slasher who is picking off a theatre company one by one. The funny thing is most of the victims deserve it as they are distinctly unlikeable. Sure it's not that original and the clichés come thick and fast but there is plenty of scares and suitably nasty kills . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/23 Full Review Jens B This is one of those late night viewings where I don't know the next day if I dreamed up some elements of it or if the movie actually was that weird and stylish. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/23 Full Review JJJJJJ J An enjoyable and engaging slasher that acknowledges what it is and does not take its self to seriously. Stylistically this film is very closely aligned with the giallo genre, much more so then many other American slashers yet the lack of ambiguity/mystery around the killer separates it from the Italian genre. On the plot, the start of this film is a bit mixed, the main issue being the character creation of the director who really is unlikable. As the film progresses most of the problems disappear and once the actual slasher gets going is quite interesting and at times unique. The film is self aware of the genre and type of film it is and has fun with it. I'd recommend this film to any slasher fan or lover of Italian Giallo's.
